Role Overview The Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA) office manages an extensive portfolio of research awards and proposals. The Grants Specialist I will maintain an entry‑level desk, manage awards through pre‑award stages, ensure compliance, and negotiate agreements.
Key Responsibilities
Review grant awards for compliance with federal, state and sponsor rules and university policies.
Manage awards from pre‑award stages through to project close‑out, excluding financial accounting.
Ensure compliance with agency guidelines and applicable regulations, including animal/human subject use, debarment and drug‑free workplace.
Ensure accuracy of proposal budgets, including indirect costs and subcontracting.
Assist faculty and staff with interpreting agency rules and documenting requirements.
Negotiate and authorize agreements on behalf of UGA or its research foundation.
Serve as liaison between funding agencies and faculty regarding complex questions.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
Foundation knowledge of institutional policies for external funding and finance.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with university personnel, agencies, and private organizations.
Attention to deadlines and performance metrics in a deadline‑oriented environment.
Strong commitment to excellent customer service.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Institutional policies and procedures relating to external funding.
Effective working relationships at all levels.
Clear communication with PIs and UGA personnel.
Work under varying supervision levels.
Customer service excellence.
Physical Demands Sitting at a desk and computer for long periods.
Background & Credit Checks Offers pending completion of a background investigation, including a criminal background check and, if applicable, a credit check.
