Description The University of Arizona Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency that serves a vibrant and diverse community. Full‑authority Arizona Peace Officers in the department carry out crime control, traffic safety, community engagement, and crime prevention duties. The department offers a variety of career paths and specialty assignments, and seeks motivated entry‑level applicants who demonstrate effective critical thinking, sound judgment, and good physical and mental health.

Responsibilities • Conduct patrols and respond to incidents in the university and surrounding communities. • Perform traffic enforcement and safety inspections. • Engage with students, faculty, and visitors to promote safety and community relations. • Investigate complaints and assist in crime prevention efforts. • Maintain accurate reports and documentation of duties performed.

Requirements

US citizenship

Age 21 upon completion of the police academy

No felony convictions

No dishonorable discharge from the military

High‑school diploma or GED

Valid Arizona driver’s license at the time of employment

Applicants must meet Arizona Peace Officer Standards & Training (PAST) mandates as outlined in Rules R13‑4‑105, 106, 107, and 109. Candidates must also pass a physical agility assessment that includes a 500‑yard run, a 99‑yard obstacle course, a 165‑lb body drag (32 feet), a climb over a 6‑foot chain link fence, and a climb over a 6‑foot solid wall. Each event is timed. A written exam is also required.

Application Process Candidates must first apply online through the University of Arizona Human Resources website. Once the application is received, instructions for completing the Personal History Questionnaire, as well as the UAPD and AZPOST background applications, will be emailed. Successful candidates will undergo polygraph, medical, psychological, drug testing, and an in‑depth background check.

Salary and Benefits Starting salary: $56,238 annually ($27.038 hr); increases to $57,925 ($27.849 hr) after graduation from the police academy.

Other Information This position has a one‑year probation period. Officers must be willing to work rotating shifts/days off and public holidays. Qualifying sworn personnel have opportunities for rank and lateral advancement as well as specialty assignments within the department.
