Job Description - Direct Care Worker II (2500087X)

Overview The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) seeks a caring and compassionate applicant for the role of DIRECT CARE WORKER II (DCW II). The DCW II position is a shift supervisor position that provides oversight and direct services to individuals with developmental disabilities. This role offers excellent opportunity for career advancement within DDS.

Duties and Responsibilities

Assist individuals in meeting personal care and nutritional needs.

Assist and support individuals in making choices in life.

Maintain individuals’ rights by complying with applicable laws and regulations.

Provide leisure activities; may drive individuals to work, appointments, and recreational activities.

Provide daily supervision and training to Direct Care Worker I staff to ensure advocacy for individuals and demonstrate respect and positive regard for developmental disabilities.

Oversee, as the shift supervisor, health and safety of individuals by administering medications.

Communicate with medical and health care providers regarding health concerns and accompany individuals to appointments as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of practices and procedures necessary to assure health and safety of individuals, including evacuation procedures.

Ability to plan, assign, and coordinate activities of others.

Ability to give written or oral instructions in a clear and understandable manner.

Special Requirements

Must possess current and valid Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

Location and Schedule

Location: Southwest Valley Community Homes, Westfield, MA.

Schedule: 07:00am - 03:00pm, Monday – Thursday; Friday and Saturday off. This is a 24‑hour/7‑day staff position requiring mandatory overtime when necessary.

Compensation Salary placement is determined by experience, education, and the internal compensation structure. For non‑management bargaining unit positions, compensation follows the applicable collective bargaining agreement. (See internal guidelines for salary range.)

Vaccination Requirement Title 101 CMR 23.00 requires certain staff to have COVID‑19 and Influenza vaccinations or mitigation measures. Successful candidates must attest to vaccination status.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements: At least one year of full‑time or equivalent part‑time experience providing direct support services to persons with developmental/intellectual, emotional, or physical disabilities; or an equivalent combination of experience and substitutions.

Substitutions: Associate’s degree or higher in human services or related field (sociology, special education, psychology, rehabilitation counseling, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.).

Current valid motor vehicle driver’s license at a class level specific to assignment.
