Police Officer (Lateral Transfer)

The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards the Congress, Members of Congress, employees, visitors, and congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. The USCP protects and secures Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure, and open environment.
Eligibility & Basic Requirements
Citizenship:
Must be a United States citizen.
Age:
Must meet position age requirements (minimum 21, maximum 37, with limits increased to 39 or 40 under specific lateral transfer conditions).
Driver’s License:
Must possess a valid REAL ID U.S. driver’s license, not revoked or suspended for the past year.
Selective Service:
Male applicants must be registered with the Selective Service System; female applicants are exempt.
Background & Checks:
Must successfully complete a full field background investigation, polygraph, medical assessment, criminal, credit, and tax checks.
Training:
Must successfully complete all required training; provide certificate for one of the following: FLETC UPTP, FLETA accredited military or equivalent police training program, or CBP training programs (USBPI or CBPOPT).
Probationary Period:
Must successfully complete a probationary period.
Duty Status:
Must be in full, unrestricted duty status at the time of application and appointment.
Travel:
Travel for hiring assessments and training is at the applicant’s expense.
Minimum Qualifications
At least 9 months of law‑enforcement experience post training at the time of application.
At least 52 weeks of law‑enforcement experience at the time of appointment.
Current law‑enforcement employment outside USCP.
Must be current law‑enforcement Officer or civilian officer for required time periods.
High school diploma or GED certificate.
Examination Phase Psychological
– Candidates complete a battery of psychological assessments and a clinical interview. The examination lasts approximately four to six hours and is conducted online using a desktop or laptop, camera, and microphone. Candidates are encouraged to be well‑rested and to eat before the exam.
Medical
– A medical examination determines if a candidate is medically qualified to perform the job’s functional requirements. Candidates must fast prior to the examination.
Polygraph
– The polygraph examination is used to confirm information obtained through the selection process.
Background Investigation
– A full background investigation, including employment, residential, and personal references, criminal and credit history, and academic records, is required.
Additional Requirements & Notes Applicants must:
Show evidence of responsible driving in the last one year.
Provide a SF‑50 indicating retirement coverage by special law‑enforcement retirement provisions if applying as a lateral transfer over 39 years of age.
Failing credit, criminal, or selective service checks may disqualify a candidate.
Applicants with a misdemeanor domestic‑violence conviction are ineligible due to firearm possession restrictions.
Applicants must not be in default or delinquent on any federal guaranteed student loans.
Fingerprint data will be submitted to the FBI for a criminal history check.
Issues such as illegal drug use, arrests, or convictions are not automatically disqualifying, but deliberate misstatements or omissions at any phase of the hiring process will result in disqualification.
