Clarification from the agency United States Citizens who are current Law Enforcement and have successfully passed the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) or an equivalent program from the FBI, DEA or U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Current USCP employees not eligible. Requires a full field background investigation. Must be a United States Citizen.

Duties The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards Congress, its members, employees, visitors, and congressional buildings from crime, disruption, and terrorism, maintaining a safe and open environment for legislative activity.

Responsibilities

Serve in a protective and investigative capacity within the Protective Services Bureau (PSB), Assistant Chief of Police for Protective and Intelligence Operations.

Assigned to either Dignitary Protection Division (DPD) or Investigations Division (ID).

DPD Special Agents provide personal security for congressional leadership, members, families, visiting officials, and congressional events.

ID Special Agents investigate criminal and terroristic activity under D.C. Code and Title 18 of the U.S. Code, conduct surveillance, counter‑surveillance, and cooperate with local, state, and federal law enforcement.

Prepare investigative reports, protect intelligence operations, and coordinate with other agencies.

Travel required Domestic and international travel, 5% of total assignments.

Requirements

Top Secret/SCI security clearance required.

Must be a United States Citizen.

Must meet age requirements (21–39 with special conditions for retired law‑enforcement personnel).

High School diploma or GED.

Valid U.S. driver’s license.

Qualifications

Completed FLETC Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) or equivalent from FBI, DEA, or U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with transcript included.

Current law‑enforcement experience (9 months post training; 52 weeks at time of appointment).

Full and unrestricted duty status at time of application and appointment.

Successful completion of full field background investigation, polygraph, medical, and psychological examinations.

Male applicants must register with Selective Service; female applicants exempt.

Must possess a firearm and ammunition proficiency.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED.

FLETC CITP or equivalent certification required.

Additional Information The USCP offers competitive starting salary of $87,527, with overtime up to maximum pay rate. A $5,000 recruitment bonus and an additional $5,000 after 18 months of service are provided. The Benefits package includes health, dental, vision, life, long‑term care, Thrift Savings Plan, flexible spending accounts, employee assistance program, and a Student Loan Repayment Program incentive up to $80,000 annually.
