Overview The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards Congress, its members, employees, visitors, and the Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. The USCP protects and secures Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure, and open environment.
Responsibilities
Enforce Federal and District of Columbia laws, regulations, and USCP rules.
Physically protect the Capitol complex, its members, visitors, and staff from threats of crime and disruption.
Manage accidents and crime scenes, restrict access, observe, stop, and question suspicious persons.
Prepare reports and testify in court.
Perform protective services, safeguard federally‑owned buildings and property, and protect government equipment and property.
After training and probation, pursue promotion opportunities to higher rank or specialized assignments (e.g., Special Operations Division, Canine Explosives Detection Team, Containment Emergency Response Team, Dignitary Protection Division, Intelligence Section, Criminal Investigations Section, Threat Assessment Section, Hazardous Incident Response Division).

Requirements Complete application and required documents must be submitted by the closing date. The application process includes an online assessment, followed by further biographical information and supporting documents. Qualified candidates must submit an Authorization for Release and a Personal History Statement (PHS). A credit, criminal history, and driving record review will be conducted. The ESOPH system will guide candidates in providing the PHS and participate in the Initial Assessment Phase, which is conducted virtually. The orientation provides an overview of USCP and the hiring process.
Qualifications Applicants must have completed one of the following training programs: FLETC UPTP, FLETA accredited military or other equivalent police training program, or CBP training programs (USBPI or CBPOPT). Proof of certificate must be included with the application.
Must be current law enforcement and possess 9 months of law enforcement experience post‑training at time of application and 52 weeks of experience at time of appointment. Must be employed outside USCP. Must be a United States citizen and meet age requirements (21–59, with specific retirement provisions). Must possess and maintain a valid REAL ID U.S. driver’s license and provide evidence of responsible driving within the last year. Male applicants must register with the Selective Service.
Physical and mental fitness: full field background investigation, medical examination, polygraph, psychological assessment. Must successfully complete probation, training, and all background checks. Must be able to drive proficiently and maintain firearm proficiency. Must meet uniform and grooming standards. Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Probationary period: one year.
Education High School diploma or GED certificate required.
Additional Information USCP offers a competitive starting salary of $83,362, with possible higher base salary based on current earnings. A recruitment bonus of $10,000 is provided ($5,000 after appointment and $5,000 after 18 months of service).
