Diesel Mechanic/Technician I - Experienced
Join Penske Truck Leasing as an experienced diesel mechanic at our Birmingham, AL location. This role involves performing routine and major maintenance on a fleet of modern truck and trailer equipment. You will work independently, mentor junior technicians, and ensure the highest safety and reliability standards.
Location & Shift Address: 226 Oxmoor Circle, Birmingham, AL 35209. Shift: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, operating 7 days a week. Shift premium: $2.00 for 2nd shift and $3.00 for 3rd shift.
Main Responsibilities
Maintain vehicle safety and performance through preventative maintenance and timely repairs
Repair and troubleshoot major components, including engines, transmissions, differentials, turbochargers, and fuel systems
Keep work area clean, safe, and organized
Use Penske’s tools and technology to log, research, and complete repairs, including basic diagnostics
Continuously develop skills through Penske’s technician training program
Support additional projects and tasks assigned by supervisor
Qualifications
At least 6 years of practical truck and tractor‑trailer maintenance experience
High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair preferred
Specialized training in diagnosing and troubleshooting major components, OEM training courses, ASE certification, and 608/609 certifications preferred
Proficiency with all trade tools, including welding, diagnostics, hand, and power tools
Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred
Strong problem‑solving, customer service, communication, and teamwork skills
Willingness to work in non‑climate‑controlled conditions and to travel within the district as needed
Basic computer skills; compliance with DOT, OSHA, and Penske safety and maintenance policies
Reliable attendance and adherence to safety requirements for driving Penske and customer vehicles
Physical Requirements
Frequent movement, standing, walking, climbing, bending, and sitting for extended periods
Use hands to grasp, reach, touch, handle, and operate tools or controls regularly
Work at heights using ladders and elevated platforms safely
Work safely in all weather conditions
See and hear clearly to navigate the work environment safely
