The toolmaker is responsible for making precision tools (such as jigs, moulds and dies), special guides and holding devices. They will work with a variety of materials including steels, aluminum, high‑temp alloys and plastics. The role also involves operating computer‑numerically controlled (CNC) machines, so an understanding of g‑code programming is necessary.

Typical Tasks Include

Assembling, fitting and repairing tools

Following engineering drawings to measure and mark out the design for the tool

Using machinery such as manual and CNC lathes, manual and CNC mills, presses, and grinders to cut and shape the tools

Using 2D and 3D computer aided design and manufacturing software (CAD/CAM)

Using precision measurement instruments such as calipers, micrometers, microhite, etc.

Assisting with tool maintenance

Scheduling workflows in the tool room

Supporting engineering staff in the design of tools and dies

Maintaining the work area and equipment in a clean and organized fashion that follows all required safety policies and regulations

Requirements

3+ years of toolmaking experience is preferred

3+ years of running manual and CNC lathes and mills

Ability to read drawings and process sheets

Working knowledge of GD&T
