Key Responsibilities
Will assist the state by unloading carts of incoming parcels, federal and interoffice mail from delivery routes and separate by agency.
Responsible for knowledge of current United States Postal Services regulations governing preparations of all classes of mail (17 million pieces annually) for presentation to the United States Postal Service. Processes outgoing federal mail using postage scales and postage metering machines.
Responsible for processing and applying postage in the most economical manner, either through assistance with mail piece design, bar coding or vendor selection. Responsible for accurately applying postage to mail pieces and correctly billing charges to over 400 separate internal customer accounts.
Unloads mail from federal mail equipment and separates by building. Sorts and cases incoming and outgoing federal and interoffice mail by agency to approximately 80 different mailboxes. This mail may consist of tax payments, license applications, crime evidence, employment applications, client forms, child support payments or legal correspondence. Must have knowledge of ALL agency acronyms, staff and addresses, to ensure accurate and timely delivery of mail.
Must be alert to suspicious packages, and letters received for where they are provided from because we are a front line defense for elected offices, department heads and the Governors Offices. When necessary or as time allows, help with customers and other mail related duties.

Qualifications Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
One year of full-time work experience processing mail.
Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to six months of work as a Mail Clerk 1.
Other requirements:
Some positions in this class may require the possession of a valid Iowa driver’s license.
Some positions in this class may require an applicant to have the ability to pass a background investigation.
