Job Class Title: HVAC Mechanic I (S) Position Number: 60068380 Grade: NC08
Location Piedmont Correctional Institution, Salisbury, N.C. (Rowan County). Medium male prison facility housing 800 inmates.
Description of Work Salary Range: $37,782–$66,120 per year. This full‑time (40 hours per week) position includes State Benefits.
Positions in this class perform the full range of journey work duties associated with construction, maintenance, and repair of air‑conditioning systems and associated air handling, chilled water distribution, and control mechanisms. Duties also include maintaining refrigeration units and their control systems. Work assignments are typically given in the form of work orders indicating the nature of the problem. Workers are expected to identify the cause of the problem, determine materials, tools, and methods required, and carry out repair procedures independently on most jobs. Larger, more complex jobs may be reviewed by a technical supervisor. Positions may train new mechanics or supervise helpers.
Responsibilities
Identify cause of HVAC problems and determine repair methods.
Maintain refrigeration units and control systems.
Work independently on most jobs and consult supervisor for complex issues.
Train new mechanics or supervise helpers as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of air‑conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Knowledge in the use of tools and equipment utilized in the repair of air‑conditioning systems.
Requirements
High school or GED diploma and three years of progressive experience in installation, maintenance, or repair of air‑conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution, and control systems; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
Pass a background check to be eligible for this job.
Management Preferences Positions may be reviewed by a technical supervisor for large, costlier, exceptional, or more complex jobs.
