In a typical day the department receives about 282 calls for service (≈ 103 000 calls annually). Staff also engage in proactive community education and crime‑prevention activities to help protect all of Eugene’s residents.

Salary Range
and Benefits Lateral Police Officers start at a higher pay step than entry‑level applicants. Wage steps start at $37.59/hour and increase up to $47.92/hour. Pay step is based on experience, certification, agency size, specialized training, assignments and other job‑related factors.
• Lateral experience requires a minimum of 3 years’ policing; • Entry‑level with law‑enforcement experience plus 5–6.99 years; • Lateral Police Officer positions qualify for relocation reimbursement (up to $7,500 for 50‑mile or greater moves, receipts required within 45 days).
• Police Officers may earn up to an additional 15% premium pay after three years of employment and 5% increase for demonstrated fluency in an eligible language (e.g., Spanish).
• Employees receive benefits under the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System, life insurance, family health, dental and vision care, uniform, weapons and equipment, and other city benefits.
Minimum Qualifications – Lateral Officer
Experience : At least three years of continuous service exercising police powers at a municipal, county or state agency. Service must be current, full‑time, continuous with no more than a 30‑day break and must have been employed within 90 days of Eugene hire date.
Education : High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Certification : Lateral officers with a state certification recognized by Oregon do not attend DPSST Basic Academy; those with non‑recognized certification must attend a two‑week Career Officer Development Academy at DPSST in Salem upon hire.
Driver’s License : Valid Oregon driver’s license (or ability to obtain by hire date); must pass a driving‑records check.
Background Investigation : Must pass a police background investigation.
Physical & Drug Screening : Must pass a physical assessment, drug test, hearing test and visual acuity test per DPSST standards. Will sign a statement agreeing to refrain from tobacco use while on duty.

Background investigation.
Interview with the Chief.
Medical and psychological exams.
Successful applicants receive a conditional offer and must complete a full physical, psychological testing and interview prior to official hire.
Career Path Opportunities Special teams include SWAT, Crisis Negotiations, Explosive Disposal Unit, Honor Guard, K‑9 Unit, Traffic Enforcement Unit, Crowd Control Team, School Resources Team. Other assignments: Field Training Officer, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Airport Officer, Bike Officer. Promotion through ranks and a potential investigative (detective) role are available.
