The Position The Barista works in Rooney’s Brews; a coffee shop and café located in Roanoke College’s Fintel Library. This position requires a passion for specialty coffee and a desire to learn the craft with customer service ability. The Barista will thrive if they possess strong interpersonal communication, customer service and teamwork skills, and can multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment. This position works August through May when Rooney’s Brews is open.

Key Responsibilities

Serve customers with enthusiasm in a positive and friendly manner

Prepare and serve beverages to operation standards

Prepare and serve food in a safe and sanitary manner

Handling payment transactions accurately using a variety of tenders, including: Cash, Credit, etc.

Develop strong knowledge of menu items and be able to provide customers with product details

Complete training programming as directed to ensure strong product knowledge.

Maintain all equipment, cleaning as required for peak operating performance

Daily and weekly cleaning tasks as required in the café, seating areas and storeroom

Complete daily inventory of menu items to assist in ordering products

Wash dishes and small wares as needed

Educating customers on specialty coffee and engaging them for feedback

Opening and closing of café following operating procedures

Education, Experience, Skills, And Abilities

Previous experience in coffee service is preferred, however previous food service or customer service experience is considered.

Ability to meticulously maintain a clean and safe food service environment

Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment

Positive communication with guests and co‑workers is essential

Required to obtain ServSafe certification within 6 months of hire.

Weekend availability may be required.
