A great UHY client is seeking an
Accounting Specialist
to join their team. The ideal candidate will have Real Estate/Property Management experience and familiarity with AppFolio.
The
Accounting Specialist
role is a permanent, direct‑hire, onsite position.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with day‑to‑day accounting operations including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable and receivable
Support the Controller with preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, management reports, and assist with year‑end financials
Provide assistance to the Controller with property‑level accounting for both commercial and residential portfolios
Monitor lease agreements and ensure proper revenue recognition
Assist with annual budget preparation and track actual performance versus budget
Assist with processing payroll, ensuring accurate and timely payments to employees
Office Administration
Manage insurance claims activity, including documentation, communication with carriers, and follow‑up on claim status
Oversee utility accounts and billing for all properties, ensuring accuracy and timely processing while monitoring consumption trends
Maintain organized systems for contracts, vendor files, billings, and property‑level operational data
Coordinate communication between property management staff, the external CPA firm, insurance providers, utility companies, and other vendors
Support other data management tasks as required
HR & Employee Support
Assist with HR compliance and support benefits administration
Serve as a point of contact for employee inquiries
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance or related field
5+ years of relevant experience, preferably in real estate or property management
Experience with
AppFolio
or similar property management software strongly preferred
Proven ability to manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize accordingly
Comfortable working independently in a small team environment
High level of integrity and discretion; experience handling confidential financial matters
Excellent communication and organizational skills
This is a fully onsite role based in Birmingham, MI. Our office operates Monday through Friday and values hands‑on collaboration, transparency, and consistency.
