Summary of Role
The Trade Specialist will oversee the compliance and operational aspects of international trade, focusing on minimizing risk, ensuring timely customs clearance, and applying international trade agreements and regulations (such as tariffs, HTS classification, and Incoterms) to business transactions. This role requires a strong understanding of global supply chain management and regulatory frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
Trade Compliance & Regulation:
Ensure strict
adherence to all U.S. and foreign import/export laws
(e.g., Customs, Bureau of Industry and Schrift and Security/BIS, OFAC).
Determine and apply accurate
Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS)
classifications and
Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCN)
to products.
Manage and maintain records for Free Trade Agreement (FTA) eligibility and special programs like duty drawback.
Monitor and communicate changes in international trade regulations, tariffs, and sanctions that impact company operations.
Documentation & Customs Operations:
Prepare, review, and process all necessary import/export documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, and Certificates of Origin.
Liaise directly with
Customs Brokers, Freight Forwarders,
and regulatory agencies to facilitate smooth and timely customs clearance.
Manage customs audits and participate in regulatory review processes.
Logistics & Process Optimization:
Coordinate with logistics and supply chain teams to optimize shipping routes, costs, and delivery schedules.
Provide guidance on appropriate
Incoterms
(International Commercial Terms) for transactions.
Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of global trade operations.
Internal Support & Training:
Serve as the subject matter expert on trade compliance for internal departments (e.g., Sales, Legal, Finance, Procurement).
Conduct internal training on trade compliance best practices and procedures.
