Sales Engineer

The Sales & Estimating Engineer is a customer-facing technical lead responsible for managing the front end of the opportunity pipeline. This includes everything from RFQ intake and qualification through cost modeling, proposal creation, and handoff to production. The role blends applications engineering with consultative selling to secure profitable work aligned with metal spinning, sheet hydroforming, complex machining, laser cutting, and welding capabilities. The engineer ensures that estimates reflect quality systems and special process controls. Responsibilities: Lead technical discussions on the manufacturability of exotic alloy components such as ducts, shrouds, heat shields, manifolds, and housings formed via metal spinning and hydroforming, with laser trimming as needed. Prepare customer presentations and quotations that articulate the company's certifications, process controls, and value proposition. Translate drawings, models, and specifications into costed routings covering materials, tooling/fixturing, forming, machining, laser cutting, welding, inspection, and logistics. Build pricing models that incorporate cycle times, yields for exotic alloys, setup, run labor, special process compliance, and risk/contingency. Draft clear statements of work and commercial terms, ensuring alignment with customer specifications and quality certifications. Lead cross-functional kickoff meetings from award through engineering release, partnering with R&D/prototyping, production, and quality teams. Maintain visibility on quotes, orders, and delivery commitments using an operations approach. Capture pricing and actuals feedback to continuously refine estimating accuracy and margin performance. Maintain CRM discipline and drive quarterly bookings and margin targets. Monitor market trends in super alloys/exotic metals and recommend campaigns and target accounts. Essential Skills: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent technical experience. 37+ years in estimating, applications engineering, or technical sales within precision metal fabrication/forming or machining in the aerospace/defense industry. Hands-on experience with manufacturing and fabrication processes. Ability to read GD&T prints; competence with CAD/CAM or cost-modeling tools. Working knowledge of AS9100 and NADCAP requirements and their impact on estimating and production planning. Strong commercial acumen: margin analysis, price-to-win strategies, and value-based proposals. Excellent communication and customer engagement skills. Experience with AS9100 and 5+ years of technical sales and estimating experience. Additional Skills & Qualifications: Experience with sales and estimating supporting companies like GE Aerospace, Rolls Royce, Pratt & Whitney. Familiarity with metal spinning, sheet hydroforming, multi-axis machining, laser cutting, and welding processes, including constraints of exotic alloys. Work Environment: This role is within a small company with family values experiencing strong growth. As the sole sales and estimating engineer on staff, you will work closely with the President and own efforts related to sales and estimating. The company, consisting of 35 employees, is seeing increased orders from customers due to its success. The current employee in this role, who has been in the position for over 15 years, is retiring this year. Job Type & Location: This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Brazil, IN.
