Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.Responsibilities:Plans and administers three segments of a recreation program for approximately 400 students of an Off-Reservation boarding school. These segments consist of intramural program designed for the student body’s structured and non- structured recreational activities provided after school on weekends, and holidays. Activities include special events, special interest club activities, cultural enrichment activities, and others as appropriate and a dormitory recreation program to develop individual interests, self-confidence, and skill development in various activities. Reports to the Student Services Specialist/Homeliving Specialist.Within broad program objectives and procedures developed by Student Service Specialist/Homeliving Specialist and the school administration, the incumbent selects and emphasizes activities to be offered both in the basic program areas such as swimming, bowling, intramurals, parlor games, and those specifically designed to maximize personal growth and skill development such as skiing, camping, fishing, pow wow tribal crafts, and others. Plans and coordinates the details of recurring intramural and extramural sponsored activities, including planning for transportation; schedules, coordinates, and implements recurring and nonrecurring special events, play days, weekend outings, social activities in the home living areas by utilizing staff assignments throughout the dormitories. (Home Living Specialist/Student Service Specialist)Provides guidance and leadership to the various leisure-time activities and participants. Modifies, or otherwise changes, plans for specific activities as developments require. Fosters through activities, the individual and group development goals of teamwork, self-esteem, sportsmanship, leadership, and a sense of social responsibility for youth at the school. Schedules and publicizes student activities ensuring maximum effectiveness in attracting and motivating participation by compiling and distributing monthly activity calendars, weekly campus social and recreational schedules, and individual event flyers, and facility schedules that are placed prominently around the campus. Develops periodic plans, surveys, and annual budget requirements with support data for the consideration of immediate supervisor and for inclusion into the school budget. Ensures that program emphasis is on those activities most appropriate to the interests and needs of the youth served.Arranges for the necessary supplies and equipment to carry out to various youth activities programs while ensuring the safety of participants. Is responsible for the scheduling, securing, and maintaining of recreation equipment and facilities. Maintains adequate supplies needed to ensure program continuity throughout the school year. Is responsible for the department’s major equipment inventory control records. Contracts for other services and activities that compliment existing programs.Continuously evaluates the effectiveness of ongoing leisure-time activities from the standpoint of participant response, resources, unforeseen developments, and program objectives. Adapts and varies program activities in the light of findings, to insure maximum possible achievement of the broad objectives to provide students with enhances leisure activities that encourage self-expression, cultural appreciation, self-development, social growth, and racial awareness and understanding.Must be able to gain the confidence and respect of the school staff, of the students, parents, and of the general public in personal contacts. Work closely with the social, religious, and other organizations, which are interested in the education and the general welfare of the students. Must attain a good understanding of various tribal cultures, of the students’ ways of thinking in order to facilitate the educational and cultural progress of students.The incumbent is required as an incidental duty to operate a Government-owned or leased motor vehicle in the performance of duties. Incumbent is required to maintain an active Government Issued Charge Card and Student Activity Card for this position. Incumbent is responsible for processing and submitting School Bus Fleet Card statements for all School Buses according to established deadlines for all Government issued Purchase/Activity and Fleet cards.Performs other related duties as assigned. The position requires evening and weekend tours of duty.**SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:**Refer to BIE Job Category Standards for additional qualification requirements and substitutions for education. **BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:**Education: Bachelor's Degree;ORExperience: Three (3) years related experienceAs a basic requirement, applicants will have education or experience as described under either A, B, or C below:

A. A full 4-year course in an accredited college or university with major study appropriate to the field of recreation, physical education or therapeutic recreation. Applicants whose major field of study is Physical Education/Recreation may qualify for assignment to a position in one of the specializations on the basis of 15 semester hours of appropriate course work; or

B. Three years of experience in which the candidate has demonstrated a knowledge of the goals, principles, methods and techniques of education and an understanding of the interests and motivations of individuals and groups equivalent to that which he would have gained through the education described in A above. #J-18808-Ljbffr
