Omni Underground is seeking an experienced Diesel & Heavy Equipment Mechanic to maintain, diagnose, and repair our fleet of underground utility and directional drilling equipment. This role is critical to keeping our drill crews productive, safe, and profitable. We are a full turnkey underground utility contractor specializing in HDD, potholing, vault/box setting, trenching, and restoration. Our mechanic must understand field realities, prioritize uptime, and take ownership of fleet reliability. This is not a shop-only role — you must be comfortable supporting active job sites, troubleshooting under pressure, and communicating clearly with operations and foremen.

Responsibilities

Equipment & Fleet Maintenance:

Diagnose, repair, and service diesel engines and hydraulic systems

Maintain HDD equipment (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, etc.)

Service skid steers, mini excavators, backhoes, loaders, compressors, trailers, and support equipment

Perform preventative maintenance (PMs) to reduce breakdowns and downtime

Maintain service records and PM schedules

Field Support:

Respond to field breakdowns and emergency repairs

Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical issues on-site

Coordinate with foremen and COO to prioritize repairs

Identify equipment issues before they become failures

Shop & Yard Management:

Keep the shop and yard organized and safe

Manage tools, parts inventory, fluids, and consumables

Identify needed equipment repairs or replacements

Assist with equipment inspections and readiness

Safety & Accountability:

Follow all safety procedures and lockout/tagout protocols

Ensure equipment is compliant and job‑ready

Take ownership of equipment condition and uptime

Communicate clearly and professionally with leadership

Qualifications Required Qualifications

3+ years of experience as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic

Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, heavy construction equipment

Ability to diagnose problems efficiently under pressure

CDL Class A

Comfortable working in shop and field environments

Strong work ethic and accountability mindset

Preferred Experience (Not Required but Strongly Valued)

Directional drilling equipment experience

Underground utility construction background

Fleet maintenance in construction or civil environmentsWelding or fabrication experience

Compensation: $25 - $37 hourly
