Underwriter – Middle Market

We are working with a well-established national property and casualty insurance Carrier to identify a Commercial Middle Market Underwriter for the Mid-Atlantic Territory (NC, SC, VA). This position is 100% remote within a local territory, and well suited for an experienced commercial lines professional who brings strong technical underwriting skills, sound judgment, and a relationship-oriented mindset. The underwriter will be responsible for evaluating moderately to highly complex risks, making informed underwriting decisions, and contributing to profitable portfolio growth within an assigned territory.
Key Responsibilities
Build, manage, and expand a profitable commercial book of business while exercising meaningful underwriting authority.
Review and assess complex submissions by analyzing exposures, pricing, financials, loss history, and overall risk characteristics.
Establish and maintain strong partnerships with agency partners through regular communication and education around products, appetite, and underwriting guidelines.
Collaborate closely with internal underwriting, marketing, and service teams to support business development and service quality.
Provide guidance, coaching, and technical support to developing underwriters as part of a collaborative underwriting team.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Business, Risk Management, or a related discipline preferred.
Five or more years of experience underwriting commercial lines business – specifically Property, GL, WC, Auto, Umbrella.
Demonstrated ability to analyze risk, make independent decisions, and communicate effectively with agents and internal stakeholders.
Professional insurance designations such as CPCU, AU, or CIC are a plus.
