Job Title: Senior Underwriter – General Liability (Construction) PAY RANGE: $150K - $250K (Hybrid) The
GL Construction Senior Underwriter
is responsible for underwriting complex and high-value General Liability risks within the construction sector. This role involves evaluating submissions, analyzing exposures, pricing accounts, and negotiating terms to ensure profitable growth while maintaining underwriting discipline. The Senior Underwriter will serve as a technical resource, mentor junior underwriters, and build strong broker relationships to drive business development. Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Risk Assessment Review and analyze construction-related GL submissions, including wrap-ups, project-specific policies, and contractor programs. Assess risk quality, loss history, financial strength, and compliance with underwriting guidelines. Determine appropriate coverage terms, conditions, and pricing based on risk characteristics and market trends. Manage a book of business to achieve profitability and growth targets. Monitor performance metrics, loss ratios, and adherence to underwriting standards. Identify and address adverse trends and implement corrective actions when necessary. Broker & Client Engagement Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and agents to drive new business opportunities. Negotiate terms and conditions to secure competitive yet profitable accounts. Provide exceptional service and responsiveness to distribution partners. Act as a technical resource for junior underwriters and underwriting assistants. Provide training and guidance on underwriting best practices and construction risk nuances. Compliance & Documentation Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with company policies, regulatory requirements, and risk appetite. Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of underwriting decisions and account files. Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or related field. Experience: Minimum 7+ years of underwriting experience, with at least 3 years focused on construction GL risks. Proven track record of handling complex accounts and large projects. Skills: Strong analytical and negotiation skills. Deep understanding of construction operations, contractual risk transfer, and insurance requirements. Proficiency in rating tools, underwriting systems, and Microsoft Office Suite. Certifications:
CPCU, AU, or RPLU preferred. Core Competencies
Strategic thinking and decision-making. Relationship management and business development. Technical expertise in construction liability exposures. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
