ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.

Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.

Manages the County Detention Center, ensuring discipline, safety, and security while conforming to State prison standards; makes weekly inspections of Center.

Writes and/or interprets all laws, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations and ensures that staff members follow same.

On-call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to respond to all disturbances and emergencies in the Center.

Coordinates and supervises all programs and activities for inmates. Handles' requests for interviews and counsel inmates regarding problems associated with their confinement. Investigates all incidents.

Responds to all complaints.

Authorizes all orders for supplies. Supervises and coordinates all maintenance needs to ensure that all equipment, supplies, etc. are working properly.

Coordinates all court proceedings.

Coordinates and supervises various public service programs for the County.

Serves as a liaison among staff, inmates, other agencies, and the public.

Receives and reviews various documents, records, and reports such as time sheets, applications, shift reports, incident reports, inmate records, invoices, inspection reports, menus, etc.

Communicates with various individuals and groups including Sheriff's Department, attorneys, court personnel, polices departments, fire departments, inmates and families, vendors, health professionals, and the general public, etc.

Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High School Graduation or GED equivalent and Class 2 Officer Certification.

Six (6) years of law enforcement or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Must be certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in various areas including basic jail certification, basic fingerprinting, first line supervision, etc. Must complete Jail Management course.
