Under the supervision of the Program Manager of First Generation in the Shepard Academic Resource Center (SARC), the First-Generation (FGEN) Engagement Ambassadors are yearlong positions responsible for the planning and execution of FGEN events and campus engagement initiatives. Engagement Ambassadors will take ownership of assigned events from conception to evaluation, including event planning, coordinating logistics, creating marketing materials, and facilitating the event to ensure smooth execution. Ambassadors will collaborate with fellow ambassadors and the Program Manager for guidance and support. This position spans April 2026 – April 2027. Compensation for this role is $16.30/hour until July 2026, after which it will mirror the Portland Metro minimum wage. Application Checklist

Please note:

If selected as an FGEN Ambassador, you are required to attend FGEN Staff training the week before the start of classes in August 2026 (tentatively Aug. 16th-21st). You cannot serve in any Residence Life, ASUP Executive, Anchor Leader, or Orientation roles, or participate in any other role that conflicts with the training schedule or time commitment for the Events Ambassador position. Core Duties

Work collaboratively with another Engagement Ambassador to plan, coordinate, and execute assigned FGEN events, including reserving spaces, conducting outreach to campus partners, preparing materials, managing logistics, and facilitating attendee registration. Collaborate with fellow ambassadors and Program Manager to ensure events align with established processes, timelines, and program goals. Assist all event execution (beyond those you specifically plan) as needed by staffing events and helping facilitate activities, transitions, and logistics. Assist with event marketing and recruitment, including creating promotional materials (e.g., flyers, social media posts, and Engage posts) and collaborating with the Program Manager to ensure proper posting and outreach. Participate in required meetings for the role:

Attend weekly staff meetings to discuss event plans, share updates, and provide feedback. Attend FGEN Leadership Sessions, where all FGEN Programs’ teams connect for a common topic. Meet individually with the Program Manager at least twice per semester for check-ins focused on support, reflection, and professional growth.

Participate in professional development opportunities offered through the FGEN program, including trainings, workshops, reflection activities, and skill-building sessions. Help develop strategies to increase event participation and engagement with first-generation students. Collect feedback and assist with post-event assessments to evaluate success and identify areas for improvement. Contribute ideas and strategies to improve future events based on experience and feedback. Provide general support for FGEN campus engagement initiatives and perform other relevant duties as assigned by the Program Manager. Minimum Qualifications

Be a current first-generation, full-time student enrolled at the University of Portland. In good academic standing at the University (and maintain standing throughout the duration of the position). Must be entering their second year or higher of studies for the upcoming fall term. Ability to commit 6-10 hours per week to the role, with additional availability during training and major events. Availability to attend training and preparation week before the first week of Fall Semester from August 16th-21st, 2026 (subject to change). Strong leadership skills. Strong communication skills (oral, written, and interpersonal). Interest or experience in event planning, community engagement, and coordination. Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and creating a welcoming environment for first-generation students. Submission of two recommendations (one from a UP faculty member and one from an advisor or supervisor in areas such as employment, research, internships, clubs, or ROTC) by Wednesday, February 18th. Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience with event planning, student organizations, or community outreach. Strong skills in marketing, communications, or social media. Ability to motivate and inspire peers. Physical Requirements
