Overview

Summary temporary positions not-to-exceed 1560 hours in a service year may be terminated/extended based on management needs. Defined seasonal May through September. These positions are temporary/seasonal not to exceed 1560-hour appointments. They are located at Gateway National Recreation Area. Major Duties

GS-03 : Under guidance of a surf-lifeguard supervisor, lead or authorized designate, acquire proficiency in surveillance of activities of park visitors recreating on the beach; maintain lifeguard equipment; monitor weather, tide, ocean current and related conditions; rescue swimmers in distress; provide urgent first-aid. You must be able to pass the surf-lifeguard test. The test includes: Swim 550 yards continuously in less than 10 minutes using a front crawl, and Run 1.25 miles continuously in less than 12 minutes. All applicants will be tested upon entry on duty. GS-04 : Maintain vigilant surveillance of the activities of park visitors who are in the ocean and at the water\'s edge. Maintain readiness to respond to life-threatening emergencies. Use surf-lifeguarding techniques focused on prevention. Monitor weather, tide, ocean current, and related conditions. Warn park visitors about unsafe actions or conditions. Rescue swimmers in distress or danger of drowning using rescue equipment. Provide urgent first-aid care including basic life support and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED. You must be able to pass the surf-lifeguard test. The test includes: Swim 550 yards continuously in less than 10 minutes; Run 1.25 miles continuously in less than 12 minutes. All applicants will be tested upon entry on duty. GS-05 : Work involves protecting the public against preventable danger and drowning in designated swimming areas at crowded beach locations. This includes preventive lifeguarding; rescuing individuals in distress; administering first aid and CPR; crowd control; operating and maintaining rescue equipment; enforcing agency regulations. Outdoor work for long periods is required. You must be able to pass the surf-lifeguard test. The test includes: Swim 550 yards continuously in less than 10 minutes; Run 1.25 miles continuously in less than 12 minutes. All applicants will be tested upon entry on duty. Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. You will need to sign an affidavit certifying possession of a valid state driver\'s license, provide a copy, and may be required to submit driving records. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, or 16 with approved conditions (high school graduation or equivalent, vocational training, school enrollment with employment arrangement, etc.). Government housing may be available for Sandy Hook, NJ only. Pre-Employment physical examination will be required at applicant\'s expense. Current valid CPR/AED course-completion certificate required prior to enter on duty. Qualifications

grade level, you must possess at least one of the following by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE:

At least six months of general experience. General experience means work demonstrating ability to perform the duties, or familiarity with the subject matter. Examples include YMCA, summer camp, Boy Scout/Girl Scout clubs, customer service, etc. EDUCATION:

Successful completion of at least one year above high school with coursework related to the position; include transcripts. COMBINATION of Experience and Education:

Total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify; include transcripts. To qualify for

by close of the announcement: six months of general experience AND six months of specialized experience. Provide beginning and ending dates and hours per week for each period.

EDUCATION:

Completed two years above high school with at least 12 semester hours in recreation or physical education; include transcripts.

COMBINATION:

Education and experience totaling 100 percent. To qualify for

by close of the announcement: at least one full year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-04 level; OR

EDUCATION:

four years above high school leading to a bachelor\'s degree with at least 24 semester hours in recreation or physical education; OR

COMBINATION:

combination of education and experience totaling 100 percent. Include transcripts. *Applicants must provide a valid Lifeguard certification, CPR certification, and First Aid certification prior to entry on duty.* Volunteer Experience

Experience includes paid and unpaid work, including volunteer programs. You will receive credit for qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education
