Overview
Associate Underwriter:
Description & Duties Associate Underwriters support our underwriting functions and staff, applying their understanding of risk evaluation and acting as ‘first line’ of risk review by performing initial analysis of data and exposure. Organizing incoming submission data for underwriter; alert any ‘red flags’ (i.e. recommend decline based on SRU appetite, etc.); support documentation and file management protocols; gather and enter risk information into quote and pricing tools; evaluate loss and coverage for the underwriter. Support the underwriter and agent/broker with highly responsive service by managing the workflow of moderate to complex account work from clearance through policy issuance and file documentation. Acts as key liaison to Operations for business process creation/improvement and automation design efforts.
Responsibilities
Submissions
Preliminary submission analysis: In conjunction with assigned underwriter, review and determine if Builder’s Risk submission is a fit based on our underwriting guidelines and appetite.
Analyze submission documents and determine what information is still needed from broker to complete underwriting review.
Work with technical analysts to process indexing and clearance of account submissions.
File all applicable submission documents as well carrier referrals & approvals/declinations.
Quote & binder processing:
Generate proposals for coverage.
Ensure correct terms, conditions, & pricing apply.
Validate all applicable carrier contracts on eligible markets.
Issue Binders
Confirm final terms, conditions, and pricing.
Assign applicable policy numbers.
Identify outstanding subjectivities and follow up for receipt.
Loss Control
Inspection scheduling, review, and recommendation follow up: Coordinate with Broker, Underwriter, and Inspection Vendor for timely scheduling of account inspections.
Review and analyze completed inspections for any applicable loss control recommendations.
Draft inspection recommendations and follow up with Broker for satisfactory compliance.
Endorsements and Service Requests
Ensure timely processing of all endorsements and service requests.
Assess and confirm specific actions with underwriter, acting within authority guidelines.
Follow up for any trailing documentation and coordinate with accounting on timely receipt of payment and/or return premiums.
Underwriting Development
Attend marketing events and foster long-term broker relationships alongside assigned underwriter.
Develop builder’s risk underwriting acumen via individual account analysis, policy form examination, claim reviews, carrier interaction, and loss control management.
Cultivate market savviness via immersion into builder’s risk underwriting with greater SRU builder’s risk underwriting team.
Qualifications
We are looking for people with: Broad knowledge of insurance industry gained through a bachelor’s degree and/or 2-3 years of job-related experience.
Excellent computer skills including typing proficiency, Microsoft Office proficiency with an emphasis in Excel spreadsheets
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent attention to detail
High-level of motivation
Ability to prioritize important and pressing tasks
Innate organizational skills, willingness to take on challenges, and focus on personal responsibility
