Position Summary
The Director of Alumni & Friends Engagement serves as a leader of the Montana Tech Foundation, responsible for advancing a comprehensive and strategic alumni, friends, and annual giving program that strengthens lifelong connections and philanthropic support for Montana Technological University. This position provides visionary direction for alumni and friend engagement, annual giving outreach, volunteer involvement, and donor communications, fostering pride, advocacy, and investment in Montana Tech’s mission.
The Director collaborates closely with Foundation and University leadership, the Montana Tech Alumni Association and regional chapters, faculty, staff, community partners, and volunteers to build meaningful relationships and expand the base of philanthropic support.
Responsibilities
Alumni & Friends Engagement: Lead the design and implementation of an integrated alumni and friends engagement strategy that promotes lifelong connection, pride, and participation
Alumni Association liaison: Serve as the primary liaison to the Montana Tech Alumni Association, its Board, and regional and national alumni networks
Events and programs: Develop and manage events, programs, and communications that connect alumni and friends with Montana Tech such as on campus events, homecoming, reunions, tailgates, and regional gatherings
Campus collaboration: Collaborate with campus leadership, academic and athletic departments, and student clubs to create opportunities linking alumni with students, faculty, and campus life
Communications coordination: Coordinate alumni and friend communications, including newsletters, features, and some digital media, in partnership with the University’s marketing team
Annual Giving & Philanthropic Outreach
Lead and support annual giving initiatives that focus on donor acquisition, retention, and participation, especially among alumni and friends
Design and execute multi-channel fundraising campaigns (direct mail, email, giving events, and crowdfunding)
Develop segmentation strategies, targeted messaging, and stewardship processes to grow annual and recurring support
Partner with development team members to build a strong donor pipeline and align alumni engagement efforts with fundraising priorities
Monitor key performance indicators, evaluate results, and adjust strategies based on data-driven insights
Leadership and Collaboration
Manage staff, interns, and volunteers supporting alumni, friends, and annual giving activities
Align goals and objectives with the Foundation’s strategic plan and institutional priorities
Represent the Montana Tech Foundation at university and community events, including evenings and weekends as required
Promote a collaborative, innovative, and donor-centered culture within the Foundation team
Qualifications Required
Bachelor’s degree and experience in alumni relations, fundraising, advancement, or a related higher education/nonprofit field
Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, including public speaking and digital outreach
Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
Demonstrated ability to inspire and collaborate with diverse stakeholders
Preferred
Experience within a university foundation or advancement office
Familiarity with CRM systems (e.g., Raiser’s Edge, Blackbaud, Salesforce) and engagement analytics
Knowledge of Montana Technological University or enthusiasm for STEM-focused institutions
Proven leadership in planning and executing engagement and fundraising programs
Employment Details The Montana Tech Foundation offers a competitive salary (minimum $60,000, commensurate with experience) and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision insurance, paid leave, and retirement contributions. This is a full-time, on-campus position located in Butte, Montana. Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check.
