Responsibilities
Under direction of the Construction Manager (a Supervising Transportation Engineer), perform a wide variety of difficult and complex transportation engineering work.
Serve as the licensed professional Senior Resident Engineer on large and/or complex construction projects delivered under alternative delivery methods and/or valued in excess of $30 million.
Assign work, give instructions, and make decisions on difficult engineering and administrative problems in connection with directing work on various transportation projects.
Support telework eligibility discussions; travel to worksites as needed to meet operational needs and participate in required in-person activities.
Eligibility and Application Notes Eligibility for hire may be determined by score on the Senior Transportation Engineer, Caltrans exam. If not currently eligible, candidates must be on the state examination list to qualify. To apply for the exam, candidates should search by the classification title.
This position may be eligible for telework. Telework is discretionary and based on the department’s evolving policy. In-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Selected candidates should be able to report to the headquarters location as needed. Travel may be required and reimbursement follows applicable regulations.

Position located at 1976 E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, San Joaquin County. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.
Exposure to night work, field work, earthwork, paving operations, lab work, weather conditions, chemicals, equipment, noise, and other outdoor/indoor conditions.
Hardhat and safety vest or approved safety shirt, and eye protection must be worn in the field.
Travel may be required; a valid California driver’s license is desired.
Occasional overtime and workload variability, with possible geographic transfer and peak-time vacation restrictions.

Special Requirements
This position requires a valid Professional Engineering License issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers for appointment.
Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required and must be submitted along with your State application. The SOQ discusses how your education and experience meet the evaluation criteria and demonstrates the ability to present information clearly in writing. The SOQ must not exceed two pages and must be written in at least 12-point font. Each evaluation criterion must be addressed separately and in order.
Resumes, letters, and other materials will not be considered as responses to the SOQ.
Evaluation Criteria
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing (including presentations) and competently represent the Department.
Knowledge and experience tracking and monitoring cost, scope, and schedule of projects and operating budgets.
Knowledge and experience of Construction Contract Administration and Job Order Contracts.
Experience and ability to lead teams.
