Overview
This is a position-specific recruitment for the Maryland Port Administration (MPA). The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this MPA position/function only. All interested persons will need to re-apply for any future recruitment conducted for this classification. Relocation expenses may be covered by the MPA for exceptional selected candidates.
The Maryland Port Administration (MPA) is a 203-employee transportation business unit within the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and is the public face of the Port of Baltimore. MPA was created by the Maryland General Assembly to increase waterborne commerce through the ports in the state. The Port of Baltimore plays an integral role as an economic generator and job creator, in addition to maintaining our nation’s supply chain and moving vital goods to industries and consumers. As one of the nation’s top ports for total cargo tonnage and overall dollar value of cargo, the Port of Baltimore is also one of the most diverse ports in the United States with over 140,000 jobs in Maryland linked to port activity. General Role Description MPA is seeking a motivated, positive, detail-oriented, and customer service-driven marketing and sales professional to join the MPA’s Commercial Development Division. The primary responsibility is to provide sales and marketing knowledge and world-class customer service to current and potential new customers to maintain and increase import and export cargo through the Port of Baltimore.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Some of the essential duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Maintain regular contact with all assigned accounts/lines of business to include shippers, terminal operators, importers/exporters, and transportation companies.
Promote the benefits and capabilities of the Port of Baltimore to attract new customers/tenants.
Develop mutually beneficial relationships with existing and potential lines of business to increase annual cargo volumes.
Plan and undertake in-state, out-of-state, and international marketing trips to meet with existing and potential new customers.
Develop and execute comprehensive marketing plans focusing on assigned lines of business (Container, Automobiles, Roll-On/Roll-Off, Break-Bulk, Bulk, Cruise).
Plan and participate in promotional events, sales calls, meetings, quality control seminars, trade shows, and conferences to network and market the Port.
Analyze market trends, cargo data, and carrier services information to stay abreast of maritime industry and assist in short/long term program planning.
Forecast trends in the maritime industry and target customers and commodities for marketing/sales purposes.
Qualifications Education:
Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Advertising, Mass Communications, Business or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
Eight (8) years of professional sales and marketing experience, six (6) years of which must have been in the Transportation industry.
The ideal candidate will possess two (2) years of experience working in the Federal Government.
Notes and Substitutions
Professional sales and marketing work experience in the maritime industry may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to four years of the required education.
Additional graduate education in Marketing, Public Relations, Advertising, Mass Communications or Business may be substituted at the rate of thirty credit hours for each year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.
Licenses & Certifications
Employee duties may require operation of a motor vehicle and a Maryland driver’s license. Individuals must list their driver’s license number and expiration date on the application.
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is required to gain unescorted access to MDOT/MD Port facilities.
