MDOT’s Maryland Port Administration (MPA) is a 203-employee transportation business unit within the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and is the public face of the Port of Baltimore. The Port of Baltimore plays an integral role as an economic generator and job creator, in addition to maintaining the nation’s supply chain and moving vital goods to industries and consumers. The Port is among the nation’s top ports for total cargo tonnage and cargo value, with over 140,000 jobs in Maryland linked to the port.
Position General Role Description: MPA is seeking a motivated, positive, and driven Carpentry Professional to join its Operations Division as a Carpenter. Responsibilities include renovations, building inspections, graphic sign production/installation, locksmithing, and the installation/repair of beams, sea guards, man docks, doors, and cabinetry. This current vacancy is at the Dundalk Marine Terminal and reports directly to the Skilled Trade Supervisor I.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Creating and installing signs and banners.
Repairing, maintaining, and installing all types of doors and windows, including overhead garage doors.
Repairing wharves and sea guards at marine terminals.
Performing general building maintenance, such as roof, gutter, siding, and painting work.

All costs associated with the CDL license requirements during the probationary period are covered by the MPA.

Minimum Qualifications Education:
Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience performing skilled trade work in the area of Carpentry.

A vocational/technical certificate may substitute for one year of the general experience.
Military service experience may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Operation of motor vehicles is required; a Maryland driver’s license must be listed on the application. During probation, a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements for Hazardous Materials may be required.
TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) may be required for unescorted access to MDOT MPA facilities; training and certification for permanent status may be required.
Additional Notes
Must be willing and available for duty at hours, day or night, as required to maintain continuous operation; call-in duties apply.
May be exposed to hazardous materials and may require medical testing and protective equipment such as respirators.
Essential Employee status may apply; pre-employment drug testing and substance abuse testing may be required per regulations.
Pre-employment checks may include background and reference checks.
