Student Independent Living Coach for IPSE's Elevate Program (On Campus Housing)
Note:
This position is only to currently enrolled NC State students in good academic standing. The selected residential mentor must live on site in University Housing from August 10, 2026 to May 15, 2027.
Overview of the College of Education:
NC State’s College of Education is a nationally ranked institution committed to preparing forward‑thinking educators, engaging communities, and conducting transformational research. The college hosts over 1,600 students in a range of programs, embraces community‑based learning, and maintains a robust research portfolio.
Elevate Program:
Elevate is NC State’s inclusive postsecondary program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The program offers academic credentials and focuses on academics, employment, personal development, independent living, and social engagement. It is housed in the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences.
Primary Purpose of Residential Mentor:
As a Residential Mentor, you will create supportive living‑learning environments for Elevate students, share an apartment suite with three students, and collaborate with Elevate staff and University Housing to build community and support individual independence and success.
Work Location:
All duties are performed on‑site and in person in Raleigh, North Carolina. Work schedule: 20 hours a week, with mandatory residence in University Housing.
3>Responsibilities Community Living & Support (60%)
Develop individualized daily, weekly, and monthly routines for Elevate students.
Collaborate with students and staff to establish independent living goals and monitor progress each semester.
Provide peer‑level support through active listening and presence in the residence halls.
Assist with time management and wellness practices.
Support development of conflict resolution skills in partnership with University Housing.
Maintain shared spaces collaboratively and encourage independence.
Help students understand and adhere to safety and emergency protocols as directed by University Housing.
Communicate concerns, including facilities issues or crisis response needs, to University Housing staff.
Lead regular check‑ins to establish community.
Assist students in navigating residential community spaces and social opportunities.
Encourage development of independent living skills through workshops and educational materials in collaboration with Elevate staff.
Develop positive interpersonal relationships with Elevate students.
Administrative & Team Responsibilities (20%)
Participate in team meetings and training sessions with University Housing and Elevate team members.
Complete administrative tasks supporting the department’s operations to sustain accurate reporting and records.
Follow protocols to assist students with accessing appropriate housing and independent living resources.
Support planning and implementation of campus and community partner events.
Perform additional duties assigned by the Project Manager for the Elevate Program.
Minimum Experience / Qualifications
Commitment to student‑centered work.
Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
Proficiency with email, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite, and virtual communication platforms such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
Ability to respond to urgent or emergent situations with professionalism and care.
Experience serving as a peer mentor.
Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA upon employment and maintained throughout the duration of employment.
Enrollment in at least 12 undergraduate or 9 graduate credit hours each semester.
Eligibility for employment by NC State Human Resources after successful criminal background check.
Complete NC State housing application and accept the housing agreement.
Full compliance with the NC State Code of Student Conduct (no academic integrity probation or other disqualifying violations at the time of employment).
Complete all Title IX reporting responsibilities for any incidents of sex discrimination.
Preferred Experience / Qualifications
Experience working with disability communities.
Proficiency with documentation and communication tools such as GroupMe, When2Work, or equitable reporting systems.
Experience developing and facilitating workshops or instructional materials.
Recruitment & Compensation Anticipated stipend: $4,000 per academic year, plus provided.
Open to NC State students in good academic standing only. Candidates must be able to commit to the specified residency dates.
