State Income & Franchise Tax Audit Analyst
Chevron is seeking an experienced State Income & Franchise Tax Audit Analyst to be responsible for managing and supporting state income and franchise tax audits across multiple jurisdictions.
Responsibilities
State Income & Franchise Tax Audits
Lead and manage state income and franchise tax audits from notice through resolution, including information document requests (IDRs), fieldwork, protests, and closing agreements
Prepare, review, and submit audit responses, schedules, workpapers, and supporting documentation
Analyze audit adjustments related to apportionment, filing methodology, nexus, income sourcing, NOLs, credits, intercompany transactions, and unitary issues
Coordinate directly with state taxing authorities, auditors, and appeals divisions
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Partner with tax compliance and tax accounting, to ensure consistent positions across returns, provisions, and audits
Coordinate with internal state tax legal team on complex audit matters and controversy strategy
Review state income and franchise tax returns as needed
Process Improvement & Documentation
Maintain detailed audit trackers, issue logs, and risk assessments
Identify opportunities to improve audit readiness, documentation standards, and process efficiency
Support internal controls and SOX‑related documentation as applicable
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field
5+ years of progressive experience in state income and franchise tax audits and tax compliance
Corporate tax department, public accounting (State & Local), or state taxing authority experience preferred
Strong technical knowledge of:
Multistate apportionment and allocation
ASC 740 concepts as they relate to audit adjustments
Nexus, combined reporting, and filing methodologies
Demonstrated experience managing audits independently and resolving complex issues
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s in taxation
Experience with large, multistate or multinational taxpayers
Ability to research and interpret state income and franchise tax statutes, regulations, rulings, and case law across multiple jurisdictions
Familiarity with tax compliance and provision software (e.g., CorpTax, Alteryx, Excel advanced modeling)
Key Skills & Competencies
Advanced analytical and problem‑solving skills
Strong written and verbal communication for audit defense and technical positions
Ability to manage multiple audits and deadlines simultaneously
Professional judgment, discretion, and the ability to negotiate audit outcomes
High attention to detail with a practical, risk‑based mindset
