Remote (Michigan candidates only) Position Overview: Consumers Energy is seeking
two Real Estate Permit/Zoning Specialists
to support land use and zoning projects for energy initiatives, including gas, electric, and renewable projects. The focus of these roles is
acquiring permits, zoning approvals, and land use permits , while representing the company in meetings with governmental agencies and municipalities. Candidates will also support public presentations and regulatory compliance activities. These positions are ideal for individuals with
experience in permitting, zoning, and land use planning , who are adaptable, proactive, and comfortable learning new procedures. Key Responsibilities: Communicate and negotiate with
local, state, and federal agencies
to obtain necessary permits, licenses, and approvals for construction and maintenance activities. Work with municipalities to
acquire land use and zoning approvals , including special land use site plan reviews and zoning variances. Represent Consumers Energy at
public and governmental meetings
(e.g., zoning boards, townships, city councils). Interpret and apply
municipal and jurisdictional policies
to ensure regulatory compliance on all real estate and permitting matters. Prepare and submit
permit applications, insurance certificate requests, bond postings , and associated documentation. Draft, review, and manage
correspondence and documentation
related to real estate and permitting transactions. Maintain thorough
records of permits, approvals, and agency correspondence . Collaborate with
internal departments
(legal, engineering, real estate) to align on project requirements and timelines. Attend meetings and
travel as required
to support permitting, zoning, and land use approvals. Conduct
public presentations and represent the company
in front of stakeholders. Use internal systems such as
GIS (end-user)
and
SAP
for project tracking and documentation. Quickly learn and apply
land use planning and zoning procedures
as needed. Required Qualifications: Minimum
3 years of experience
in the Right of Way/Real Estate industry. At least
1 year of direct experience
as a Permit or Zoning Agent. Proven knowledge of
zoning, land division regulations, and utility permitting . Ability to
interpret legal descriptions, real estate documentation, and construction drawings . Strong
organizational and time-management skills , with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Exceptional
written and verbal communication skills . Proficiency in understanding
jurisdictional regulatory processes
affecting real estate transactions. Preferred Skills: Background in
land use planning, zoning, or real estate permitting . Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
in land use planning or related field (preferred but not required). Familiarity with
Michigan municipal codes and permitting processes . Experience working with
utility companies or in the energy sector . Proficiency with
GIS and SAP
as an end-user. Comfortable with
public speaking and representing the company
in meetings. Interview Process: Interviews conducted via
Microsoft Teams
with a panel including both hiring managers. Typically
one round of interviews . Ideal candidates will start at the
same time ; onboarding occurs in Jackson office for first-day setup, with subsequent training remote. Interviews anticipated to begin approximately
two weeks after resume selection , with scheduling likely by the
