
Job Description:
The Surplus Lines Tax Manager supports a growing insurance organization that partners with highly rated underwriters, brokers, agents, TPAs, and technology providers to develop and manage specialty insurance programs and services through proprietary platforms. This role is responsible for surplus lines tax compliance, including training, reporting, and filings across multiple jurisdictions.
Responsibilities:
Serve as an expert in proprietary and third-party systems used for surplus lines policy reporting and tax calculation/payment.
Ensure timely and accurate processing, delivery, and reporting of policies and endorsements.
Review existing workflows and design new processes to improve efficiency, accuracy and timeliness of surplus lines reporting.
Partner with accounting on surplus lines tax payments and related reporting.
Lead and develop a team of surplus lines tax professionals, providing ongoing coaching and support.
Communicate regularly on reporting timelines and state payment deadlines.
Produce and maintain recurring and ad-hoc surplus lines reporting.
Support audits from state departments of insurance and carrier partners as needed.
Obtain P&C and surplus lines licenses within six months of hire, if required.
Lead by example with a high level of integrity and accountability.
Support onboarding and training of new team members.
Monitor team quality, accuracy and KPI performance.
Conduct regular coaching to enhance team effectiveness and professional growth.
Requirements:
2+ years of P&C insurance experience
Working knowledge of surplus lines compliance and insurance practices
Results-oriented mindset with strong attention to detail
Ability to quickly learn proprietary and third-party technology platforms
Strong organizational and analytical skills
Prior people leadership or team oversight experience
Clear and professional communication skills
Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
Desire for continued learning and career progression
Collaborative, team-oriented approach
Experience supporting internal and external stakeholders
Background in a startup or high-growth environment (preferred)
Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Insurance designations (preferred)
Experience with NetSuite (preferred)
