Overview Harvard University seeks a Senior Partnerships Manager for the Institutional Data Initiative (IDI). IDI works to expand access to and understanding of AI data by collaborating with libraries, government, and academic institutions to publish their knowledge collections as AI training sets. The initiative has released Institutional Books, a dataset of nearly 1 million public domain books scanned through Harvard Library. IDI’s work spans digitization, data structuring, metadata synthesis, safety and security analysis, benchmarking, and governance frameworks. The role includes building institutional partnerships, understanding AI capabilities, and contributing to community building around IDI’s work.

Responsibilities

Own the ongoing development and execution of IDI’s strategy to identify, cultivate, secure, and manage partnerships with knowledge institutions globally, including cross-institutional collaborations.

Develop outreach strategies to connect with institutions and stakeholders, including warm and cold connections, and systems to track progress.

Attend conferences to represent IDI, expand its footprint, and seed new partnerships.

Submit proposals to potential partners and shepherd partner agreements through approval processes.

Inform and sharpen IDI’s strategy to build shared infrastructure and tooling for the library community through discovery and partner collaboration.

Work with IDI’s technical team to understand capabilities and capacity.

Serve as the primary point of contact for active partners, providing updates and facilitating their input to IDI’s work.

Identify and document collaboration opportunities with detailed analysis of corpora against defined criteria.

Support work with the IDI Library Advisory Council related to partnerships.

Help build the IDI research community by onboarding and engaging institutional partners within IDI’s community platforms.

Qualifications Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and 7 years of relevant work experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

An interest in developing a high-level understanding of AI and guiding AI toward the public interest.

Experience working with knowledge institutions including libraries, academic, or government organizations.

A proven track record of developing and managing a large network of business relationships (nonprofit or commercial).

Ability to work independently to develop new opportunities from idea to execution while collaborating with a technical team.

Experience working within early-stage or high-velocity organizations.

This is a two-year term appointment with potential for renewal, subject to departmental need.

Other Information:

This position is a combination of on campus and remote work based on business needs and manager approval. Occasional travel for conferences and events as needed. All offers are made by HLS Human Resources.

Work Format Details:

Some duties may be performed at a non-Harvard location. Work location and schedule are set by the department. When not on Harvard premises, work must comply with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Some visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Details discussed during the interview process.

Salary Grade and Ranges:
