Assistant Director of Strategic Communications Position Purpose: This role works within the Athletics’ team of strategic communication content creators and collaborates with the External Strategy team. The assistant director serves as the primary contact for specific sports, working closely with coaches and student‑athletes on storytelling aligned with DCARD strategic priorities. The position requires strong organizational and communication skills, deep knowledge of social media platforms, outstanding writing and public‑relations expertise, and the ability to travel and work evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

Act as the primary liaison between assigned sport programs and the External Strategy department.

Curate and manage content for assigned sport programs, including managing social media accounts, crafting content calendars, and collaborating with other units to create artwork, graphics, and multimedia content.

Develop and disseminate press releases, student‑athlete bios, feature stories, and game‑day programs for the department’s website.

Plan and execute department‑wide social media strategy, ensuring consistency with the institution’s strategic priorities.

Compile accurate statistics for assigned sports using Genius and StatCrew, and manage current and historical team information (rosters, records, photos, videos).

Facilitate multimedia student‑athlete features, including coordinating interviews and media coverage by preparing logistics, materials, and talking points.

Maintain an ongoing understanding of industry trends, innovative platforms, and emerging media.

Promote student‑athletes and coaches for national and conference awards, and support media coverage of achievements.

Perform other duties as assigned, demonstrating commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree plus 1–2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Strong verbal communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Proficiency in social media and a proactive, strategic communication approach.

Familiarity with web technologies, including basic HTML and CMS tools (e.g., SIDEARM).

Knowledge of and experience with statistical programs such as NCAA Live Stats, StatCrew, and NCAA Genius.

Writing experience with emphasis on Associated Press style.

Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes late night and weekend hours.

Commitment to serving the needs of a diverse population.

Previous experience working in a college sports information office.

Ability to work independently and lead projects.

Familiarity with managing social accounts.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and three years’ relevant work experience with high autonomy, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of Dartmouth’s varsity sports and their rules of competition.

Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat).

Video editing and graphic design experience.
