Position Summary The Financial Aid Counselor position serves as the primary point of contact for current main‑campus undergraduate and graduate students. This position involves evaluating financial aid applications, determining eligibility for federal, state, and institutional aid programs, and providing counseling on available options. The Financial Aid Counselor serves as a key resource in promoting financial literacy and helping students make informed financial decisions to support their academic success. This position entails multiple areas of responsibility, decision‑making, and reports to the Associate Director of Financial Aid. This role is instrumental in establishing a welcoming and helpful environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Counsel prospective and returning students on all aspects of Federal, State, and Institutional Aid sources.
Package and award financial aid (scholarships, work‑study, grants, loans, etc.) in accordance with established policies and guidelines.
Respond promptly and professionally to inquiries via phone, email, and in person.
Collaborate with other departments (e.g., Admissions, Registrar, Bursar) to support student enrollment and retention.
Understand Bursar Office processes to effectively communicate to current students.
Participate in outreach activities such as conducting financial aid presentations in person, virtually, and via chat platform.
Review and resolve C‑Flag issues from FSA.
Maintain responsibility for a specific program area such as scholarships, state aid, verification, loans, athletics, etc.
Assist in processing Cost of Attendance adjustments requests for students.
Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, Title IX and Information Security, FERPA, and other state and federal guidelines.
Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.
Education/Experience
Bachelor’s Degree required, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in higher education desired.
Experience in Admissions or Financial Aid desired.
Experience with Ellucian Colleague desired.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively to all groups through both oral and written channels.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and standard digital communication methods such as web/text/chat platforms.
Ability to learn and utilize new and emerging technology.
Proficiency in utilizing/administering social media platforms.
Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy, and discretion in dealing with faculty, staff, students, parents, university officials, and the public.
Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people.
Exercise good judgment in complex and new situations.
Manage multiple, concurrent projects and meet strict deadlines.
Adaptability, flexibility, and a willingness to work in a changing environment.
Availability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity, and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University.
