The Web UX/UI Specialist will be responsible for working with various stakeholders and development teams to create useful, effective, and visually appealing interfaces for the Rowan University website and related web-based initiatives. This position requires a keen eye for design and the ability to translate user needs into intuitive and engaging digital experiences. Key responsibilities include creating wireframes, user flows, and information architecture, as well as providing art direction.
The position reports to the Director of Web Strategy and Development in the Rowan University Division of Marketing & Communication. Some evening, weekend, and holiday work is to be expected. Candidates must follow the residency requirements outlined by the New Jersey AFT.
Essential Position Responsibilities
Create detailed wireframes, functional prototypes, and high‑fidelity mockups to illustrate design concepts and interactions for various university web projects.
Conduct user research, including interviews, surveys, and usability testing to identify users needs and behaviors.
Create personas, user journey maps, wireframes, and prototypes to ensure an optimal user experience.
Analyze user feedback and website data to continuously improve usability and functionality.
Coordinate with the CMS Architect on the product road map, with regard to design and user experience.
Collaborate with back‑end and front‑end developers, external stakeholders, and marketing teams to develop solutions that facilitate a positive, consistent user experience and meet business requirements.
Work with various internal and external teams to design user interfaces that are visually compelling, cohesive, and adhere to Rowan University brand standards.
Monitor Rowan University web properties for adherence to accessibility requirements and guidelines as defined by the ADA and WCAG and implement solutions to ensure accessibility compliance.
Maintain and leverage website analytics to gather user insights, inform design decisions, and provide data to assist stakeholders with various marketing campaigns.
Create documentation, style guide, and other training materials to define and implement interface usability, consistency, and accessibility standards.
Stay up to date with digital trends and best practices to continually improve the user experience and information architecture of the university website.
Provide support for other various Rowan University website projects and initiatives.
Qualifications Required
A master’s degree in user experience, human‑computer interaction, web design, graphic design, information architecture, or related degree.
At least four (4) years of professional experience working as an information architect, web designer, UX designer, or similar role.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of web standards, accessibility, optimization, usability, intrinsic design, layout aesthetics, and SEO.
Proficiency in using design tools such as Adobe XD, Figma, or similar software.
Experience working with Google Analytics or similar web analytics tools to build reports and gather user insights.
Ability to work independently and solve problems with minimal supervision.
Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred
Familiarity with content management systems such as Cascade, Drupal, or WordPress.
Understanding of the entire web development process (design, development, testing, and deployment).
Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment.
Experience using project management tools.
Experience supporting web systems in a higher education environment.
Proven ability to stay current with rapidly‑changing technologies.
Salary:
In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is AFT: Range 27, ($85,550.86 to $98,388.88), with placement within the range determined by candidate's qualifications, professional experience, internal equity, and other factors.
For internal applicants, salary is determined per the Pay Adjustment formula (NJAC 4A:3-4.9 & 4.10).
