We are partnering with one of North America's most respected heavy civil contractors to appoint a Lead Estimator for their Northern Virginia operations.
This is a rare opportunity to step into a senior estimating role where field experience, constructability, and engineering judgment matter just as much as numbers. You'll be working on some of the most technically challenging bridge, tunnel, marine, and underground projects in the US.
This role is ideal for a "builder who estimates" - someone who understands how projects are actually built and can translate that knowledge into winning bids for major design-build and alternative delivery projects. This is not standard roadwork. You'll be leading estimates on mega-projects including: Large-scale rail bridges & passenger rail expansions Highway widening & complex interchange upgrades Marine structures, dam works & underwater construction Underground tunneling & deep civil infrastructure The current and future pipeline includes multi-billion-dollar design-build pursuits across Virginia, DC, and the surrounding region. What You'll Do
Lead Major Heavy Civil Bids
Own full estimates for bridges, tunnels, dams, marine and underground works Drive pricing strategy on complex, high-risk scopes Engineering & Constructability
Develop temporary works concepts (shoring, cofferdams, falsework) Evaluate make-vs-buy strategies and self-perform opportunities Build schedules, production rates, and pricing models Collaboration & Leadership
Work closely with operations, engineering, and design partners Support bid closeouts, proposal submissions, and site investigations Mentor estimators and influence bid strategy at the highest level What You Bring 10+ years' experience in heavy civil construction, ideally starting as a Field Engineer Strong background in bridges, marine works, tunneling, or complex concrete structures Proven ability to lead large, multidisciplinary estimates Proficiency with HCSS HeavyBid, Hard Dollar, Bluebeam or similar Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management Strong commercial judgment, leadership skills, and technical credibility Why This Opportunity?
