This position is eligible for hybrid telework. Employees living within 50 miles of the primary work location will be required to work in the office at least 50% of the time each month. Employees may reside outside the state of Minnesota if they live in a state bordering Minnesota and are within 50 miles of the primary work location. This position will monitor and review the performance of municipalities who administer the state building code with a special emphasis on those municipalities who hold delegation agreements with the department to perform code administration for public buildings and state licensed facilities. The position also provides Minnesota accessibility code mentoring and technical support to counties and municipalities who have not adopted the state building code but are legislatively required to enforce the Minnesota Accessibility Code. Inspect and plan review public buildings and state licensed facility construction projects to verify compliance with approved plans and the state building code. Investigate complaints registered regarding application, administration and enforcement of the state building code. Provide mentoring and assistance to municipalities in their administration of the state building code and state accessibility code. Participate in disaster events. Provide training and education on the state building code and state accessibility code.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be certified as a Building Official by the State of Minnesota.

Four years experience inspecting state construction projects and reviewing plan documents.

Working knowledge of the State building code.

Conflict resolution skills, and ability to handle difficult or confrontational situations that are encountered in work assignments.

Ability to provide expert level technical support and consultation to promote safety standards in construction practices.

Knowledge of local and state regulatory functions as outlined in Minnesota Rule 1300, Minnesota Building Codes and federal energy codes.

Ability to review construction drawings, specifications, and reports for relevance, accuracy, correlation and completeness.

Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, including those who may not share your same culture, ethnicity, language, or common experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience investigating complaints concerning municipal code administration and enforcement.

Language skills other than English (such as Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Karen or ASL).

Experience in the plan review and inspection of the MN State Accessibility Code.
