Job Summary Weber State University is seeking a new Director of Public Safety (DPS), who provides leadership, development, coordination, and direction for all aspects of campus safety for the university. This role oversees the Campus Police Department, Environmental Health & Safety, Emergency Management, Office of the Fire Marshal, and Risk Management. The DPS ensures that day-to-day security, public safety functions, and safety initiatives align with the University’s Strategic Plan while maintaining a high public profile and serving on the senior leadership team.

This role oversees the comprehensive process of identifying, evaluating, and managing insurable or hazard risks, and overseeing the implementation of risk solutions that help optimize university operations.

Key Responsibilities

Safety & Security Oversight:

Directs all safety activities, including Emergency Management, Fire Marshal, Environmental Health and Safety, Clery Compliance, and the Police Department.

Risk Evaluation:

Identifies potential hazard and loss exposures through surveys and inspections to develop means of improving the university’s experience against loss.

Insurance Management:

Determines risk financing and administration of insurance programs, including the reporting of university property and equipment values to insurers.

Contract Review:

Reviews major contracts, leases, and proposed policies from a risk management perspective to ensure effective loss prevention.

Claims Administration:

Directs the intake of property and liability insurance claims and assists with investigations to provide prompt service to university and non-university entities.

Strategic Coordination:

Collaborates with Facilities Management to ensure physical security of assets and works with the STAR Team to further campus safety efforts.

Committee Leadership:

Chairs the Risk Control Committee and the Accident Review Committee, and serves as an executive member of the Event Coordination Committee.

Required Qualifications

5 years related experience

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to maintain POST certification (Peace Officer Standards and Training) as required by state law for law enforcement oversight

Demonstrated understanding of federal and state laws specific to higher education, including the Clery Act, Title IX, and VAWA

A Master’s degree (MBA, MPA, or Master’s in Criminal Justice/Emergency Management)

Direct experience managing public safety and risk within a higher education environment

Physical Requirements Physical Activities: Moving about to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another, operate, activate, use, prepare, inspect, place, detect, or position, grasping, applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm, feeling, perceiving attributes of objects, expressing or exchanging ideas, ability to receive detailed information with or without assistance, repetitive motion of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Physical Requirements: Light work. Exerting up to 20 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Use of arm and/or leg controls exerting forces greater than that for sedentary work.

Visual Acuity Requirements: color, depth perception and field of vision. Required to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; using a computer terminal; extensive reading. Required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.

Conditions: The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as typical office or administrative work).
