Job Description Job Goal:
The mission of The Calculus Project is to use research-supported strategies to increase the representation and success of Black, Hispanic and low-income students in advanced mathematics. There are seven distinct components that support students year-round, and one of these is pre-teaching in the summer. Somerville Public Schools is in partnership with the Calculus Project Organization to bring the TCP program to our students.
At TCP, individuals who thrive here love working with kids, are dedicated to their craft, embrace feedback, and actively seek to build connections. As an Assistant Director, you will oversee all staff and students in the program, ensuring a cohesive and supportive environment for both learning and growth. You will perform key administrative duties, including taking daily attendance, managing program logistics, and ensuring smooth operational flow. In addition, you will work closely with the TCP Coordinator to lead and continually enhance the program, fostering team-building, effective communication, and professional development among staff.
Qualifications/Expectations
Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) with experience in teaching middle or high school mathematics and/or educational administration.
Ability to supervise and support a team of up to twenty staff members, including Lead Teachers, Associate Teachers, and Peer Teachers/Mentors (teen staff)
Ability to manage communications with community partners
Ability to provide critical feedback to staff on ways to improve classroom instruction and/or management
Ability to organize and coordinate daily activities including student attendance, family communication, and other responsibilities daily
Communicate effectively with students and staff from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds
Treat all staff and students with respect at all times, identify biased and hateful incidents, and respond appropriately
Preferred Qualifications
Experience managing a program
Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole language proficiency is a plus
Responsibilities
Lead recruitment efforts to hire TCP summer staff and co-coordinate hiring process
Mange student registration process in collaboration with with the summer leadership team
Onboard, train and supervise TCP summer staff
Recruit and manage community partners and guest speakers
Co-design summer program schedule, including field trips, guest speakers, and graduation ceremony
Co-create and implement an attendance system
Build partnership with TCP families through consistent communication
Conduct regular observations of classrooms
Collect informal feedback from TCP summer staff daily in order to make adjustments, as necessary
Report incidents to summer leadership team and other relevant staff as required; ensure that all required documents are completed as part of the reporting process
Respond to behavior concerns, conflicts, and crises as they arise
Co-plan and co-lead daily debriefs with TCP summer staff
Manage data collection for program effectiveness, including student and staff surveys and pre- and post-assessments and co-prepare program reports
Support in developing and facilitating the Count Forward curriculum, where students learn about accomplishments of STEM professionals of color.

Terms of Employment Seasonal/Yearly Employment
Location: East Somerville Community School
Stipend: $4,000
Mandatory Orientation and Professional Development Days: Week of June 22, 2026
Program Schedule July 6, 2026 – July 31, 2026
Monday through Friday
Students: 6hrs/day, 9am-2pm
Staff: 6hrs/day, 9am-2:30pm, includes 30min lunch
