Our Community Engagement and Communications team helps tell these stories. We translate technical work into meaningful conversations that inform, build trust, and support better decision-making.The Specialist will work with planners, engineers, and scientists throughout the company’s eight offices located across the Rockies and the Midwest.

The Community Engagement Specialist supports planning, design, and delivery of engagement and communications efforts for public-sector projects, as well as corporate communications initiatives both internal and external to the organization. Specialists work independently on assigned tasks while collaborating closely with project managers, technical staff, and senior communications leadership.

Key Responsibilities Develop content for engagement plans, project websites, social media, newsletters, and outreach materials

Coordinate public meetings, workshops, pop-up events, and digital engagement activities

Manage stakeholder databases, comment tracking, and engagement documentation

Support survey development, mapping tools, and online engagement platforms

Translate technical information into clear, audience-appropriate messaging

Prepare summaries, reports, and presentations documenting engagement outcomes

Assistwithproposal development and marketing efforts

Support corporate communications initiatives, including internal announcements, leadership messaging, culture campaigns, and external brand communications

Draft and edit company-wide communications, thought leadership pieces, and strategic messaging aligned with organizational priorities

Ability to work some evenings and weekends for client meetings, community events

Travel to meetings, events and FHU regional offices is required

Work Environment This position is based in FHU’s Greenwood Village (Denver) office and requires a minimum of three days per week in-office. Flexible work arrangements may be available after the first90 days of employment, based on performance and team needs.

Skills & Abilities Exceptional writing and editing skills across formats (digital, print, executive-level messaging)

Strong project management and prioritization skills; able to manage multiple deadlines with minimal oversight

Demonstrated ability to lead defined workstreams and operate independently while collaborating across disciplines

Sound judgment in messaging, stakeholder interactions, and public-facing communications

Advanced understanding of best practices in:

Community engagement strategy

Public/media relations

Social media strategy and analytics

Website development, UX principles, and content strategy

Virtual engagement and meeting platforms (Teams, Zoom, CMS, survey and mapping tools)

Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite with applied knowledge of graphic design principles

Experience in photography and/or videography, including editing and post-production

Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence; able to navigate diverse stakeholders and sensitive conversations

Comfort facilitating meetings, presenting to clients or community groups, and representing project teams

Multi-lingual skills and cross-cultural experience are valued

Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field

Minimum 5 years of experience in strategic communications, public involvement, or related field

Experience in consulting and/or local government environments preferred

Demonstrated experience managing components of complex projects with increasing independence

Experience developing and implementing engagement strategies, not just executing tasks. Familiarity with the IAP2 spectrum of engagement preferred.

Proficiency in social media platforms, website content management (e.g., WordPress, Squarespace), and digital engagement tools (e.g., Social Pinpoint, SurveyMonkey, Mentimeter)

Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365 and virtual meeting platforms (MS Teams, Zoom, WebEx)

Familiarity with transportation, infrastructure, planning, or engineering industries preferred

The pay for this position has a range of $75,000 - $92,000 annually. The actual offer will carefully consider a range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, and experience.
