Position Overview Vertical Mechanical Group is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead and expand our engineering capabilities in support of our growing Design/Build mechanical construction projects. This individual will play a key leadership role in guiding engineering strategy, overseeing project design development, and ensuring the successful integration of HVAC and plumbing systems into complex commercial projects.
The Director of Engineering will collaborate closely with Preconstruction, Project Management, and Executive Leadership to deliver innovative, cost-effective solutions that support project success from concept through completion.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the engineering function for Design/Build HVAC and plumbing projects across the organization.
Oversee mechanical system design, engineering standards, and quality control across all projects.
Provide technical leadership in the design and application of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems and other advanced HVAC technologies.
Partner with Preconstruction and Estimating teams during early project pursuit to develop conceptual designs and technical solutions.
Provide technical leadership on system selection, constructability, and value engineering opportunities.
Review engineering drawings, specifications, and calculations to ensure compliance with project requirements and industry standards.
Mentor and develop engineering staff while building a scalable engineering team to support company growth.
Coordinate with project managers, field operations, and clients to resolve technical challenges during design and construction phases.
Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, energy standards, and regulatory requirements.
Represent VMG in technical discussions with clients, architects, and consultants.
Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
10+ years of experience in mechanical engineering for commercial HVAC systems.
Strong experience in Design/Build project delivery within the mechanical construction industry.
Demonstrated experience designing or overseeing VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) systems for commercial projects.
Demonstrated leadership experience managing engineering teams or departments.
Extensive knowledge of HVAC system design including hydronic systems, VRF systems, and mechanical equipment selection.
Strong collaboration skills working with preconstruction, estimating, and operations teams.
Ability to evaluate constructability, cost implications, and project feasibility during design development.
