Salary Range $61,000 - $67,450 annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Job Summary The Strategic Communications Coordinator is based in the Office of University Strategic Communications and plays a crucial role in advancing UT San Antonio’s storytelling strategy, working with writers and multimedia content creators to craft compelling stories that bring to life UT San Antonio’s academic excellence, research excellence and innovation. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned communications professional who has the ability to think strategically about the vision of the university while managing multiple storytelling projects in a dynamic digital media environment. This team member will be a key contributor in the development of strategies to drive readership and engagement across the department’s many storytelling platforms, with a particular focus on the daily digital news site UT San Antonio Today.

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Content Ideation: Supports UT San Antonio’s mission and vision by creating an editorial strategy that promotes the university’s reputation as a nationally preeminent university. Stays informed of the local, state, national, international and university news cycles to conceptualize storytelling campaigns that elevate the university’s innovation and impact. Socializes storytelling plans, calendars and resources with content developers to ensure a unified approach to storytelling.

Content Development: Identifies, evaluates, reviews and advances compelling stories, thematic story series and innovative storytelling approaches, working closely with content producers across the university. Counsels content developers about creative methods of packaging content to enhance the impact of storytelling, such as adding video, editorial photography and interactive elements to articles. Coordinates shared content across UT San Antonio’s academic and health campuses.

Project Management: Manages the flow of content for UT San Antonio Today, Sombrilla digital magazine, and other owned department channels. Coordinates across university functions, connects content producers, sets editorial calendars and ensures that the content development schedule is met. Ensures published content meets the highest quality standards.

Editorial Support: Reviews submitted content to ensure adherence to established voice and style, and provides constructive coaching to content producers to advance storytelling projects. Maintains high standards for research, writing and fact checking aligned with the university’s institutional messaging, branding and strategic priorities.

Writing & Editing: Contributes stories to the university’s communication platforms and demonstrates superlative writing and editing skills.

Readership Engagement: Makes recommendations to broaden the reach of content posted on the primary university channels. Tracks digital engagement metrics and analyzes data to optimize readership of UT San Antonio Today and other platforms. Regularly reports key findings and makes data‑driven recommendations to increase audience engagement.

Relationship Development: Engages faculty, staff and students across the university’s campuses to grow the quality of storytelling at UT San Antonio. Leads an editorial content collective, builds collegiality and fosters a shared commitment to high‑quality storytelling.

Systems & Processes: Develops editorial guidelines, maintains short‑term and long‑term content calendars, and manages editorial workflow. Establishes and sustains efficient systems during periods of organizational change and growth and develops meaningful reports to demonstrate the department’s editorial strategy and successes.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field

Three (3) years of related work experience

Ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Communication, English, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field from an accredited institution

At least five (5) years of experience in public relations, communications, writing/editing, marketing, media relations, or multimedia content development

Organization: Organizes workflow efficiently, manages time effectively and keeps files, drafts and emails well-organized.

Technology: Strong working ability in Microsoft Office Suite; ideally would have some experience with Google Analytics, project management systems, content management systems and SEO best practices.

Critical Thinking & Decision‑Making: Demonstrates a strong ability to assess situations holistically and weigh opportunities against risks while considering institutional priorities, stakeholders and environmental factors.

Judgment: Exercises sound judgment, emotional intelligence, discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive information.

Branding: Deep understanding of organizational branding and its role in storytelling.

Adaptability: Ability to model adaptability during periods of change and growth, evolve strategies and systems as needed, and creatively solve complex problems.

Working Conditions

Able to work indoors and outdoors, with standard office equipment; able to travel between UT San Antonio campuses as needed. Occasional after‑hours and weekend work or overtime may be required.

Physical Demands

Sedentary work; sitting most of the time.

This position will work both on campus and remotely in Texas. Travel and parking expenses are the employee’s responsibility.
