Summer Camp Director

Summary Maplewood Kids Camp is looking for an experienced Camp Director to lead our summer camp operations. The Camp Director will plan, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate day-to-day camp activities to ensure the safety, growth, and enjoyment of all campers. This leadership position requires a passion for youth development, program planning, and working closely with both staff and campers to create a positive camp experience. With your experience in camp management, you’ll be responsible for overseeing staff, ensuring the welfare of campers, and fostering a safe and fun environment.

Reports To Director of Community Services

Duties & Responsibilities

Program Planning & Coordination:

Design, plan, and implement daily camp activities that align with the camp’s mission and ensure they meet the needs and interests of campers.

Supervision of Staff & Volunteers:

Manage and supervise camp staff, volunteers, and campers. Ensure staff assignments are executed effectively and provide guidance when necessary.

Behavior Management:

Address and resolve behavioral issues, discussing them with parents and campers involved when needed.

Parent Communication:

Contact parents in the event of incidents, injuries, sickness, or emergencies.

Safety & Welfare:

Ensure the overall safety and welfare of campers and staff by implementing safety protocols and conducting regular checks.

Staff Training & Evaluation:

Assist with the recruitment, training, and evaluation of seasonal and year-round staff. Help maintain sufficient staffing coverage and assist with scheduling.

Daily Operations:

Meet daily with the Director of Community Services to review the camp’s day-to-day operations, discuss plans, and address any conflicts or challenges.

Special Activities Coordination:

Organize and facilitate special activities, ensuring they align with health guidelines and camp objectives.

Crisis & Risk Management:

Develop and implement crisis and risk management procedures to maintain a safe camp environment.

Camp Program Evaluation:

Seek feedback from campers, families, and staff to assess the quality and safety of the camp experience.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional experience in camp administration, program planning, or youth development is preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 3 years of experience in a camp setting. Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role is highly desirable.

Certifications:

Current CPR and First Aid certifications are required.

Ability to listen and observe others.

Ability to read text and manuals, comprehend instructions, and process information quickly.

Physical capability to move around the camp property and participate in various outdoor activities in diverse weather conditions.

Knowledge & Abilities

Youth Development:

Knowledge of youth development principles and the ability to apply them in a camp setting.

Program Planning & Execution:

Skilled in designing and delivering engaging programs and activities that meet the needs of campers.

Human Resources Management:

Familiarity with human resource practices, including staff recruitment, training, and retention.

Crisis Management:

Ability to develop and implement risk management and crisis procedures to ensure the safety of all campers and staff.

Communication:

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both with campers and staff, and ability to communicate with parents as needed.

Physical Ability:

Must be able to move around the camp property in various environmental conditions and actively participate in camp activities.

Schedule

Shift Length:

8-hour shifts.

Work Days:

Monday to Friday.

Camp Duration:

Summer camp operates for 8 weeks.
