This distinctive opportunity is for an experienced, student‑centered health leader to guide a dedicated team of professionals serving a broad student population with varied academic, socioeconomic, and health needs.

Executive Medical Director will champion Student Health Services (SHS) as part of a holistic and integrated web of care that supports student retention and success; align departmental direction and goals with institutional mission and strategy; maximize student awareness and engagement with programs and services; and oversee clinical services with authority, accountability, and transparency.

Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee the delivery of health care services, including medical diagnostic and treatment activities of general primary care physicians, consultant specialty physicians, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals within Student Health Services (including medication abortion) to ensure a high standard of medical care consistent with college student health needs and prevailing standards of care.

Provide supervision and medical leadership to clinical staff including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, lab staff, pharmacists, athletic trainers, and contracted healthcare workers.

Oversee day‑to‑day operations of the clinic, staffing levels, patient management, workflow, equipment and resources, and facilities management.

Maintain a healthy, team‑oriented, stimulating work environment for professional development; oversee design, implementation, and assessment of training programs for clinical staff.

Develop, revise, and implement clinical policies and protocols consistent with AAAHC standards; oversee the Accreditation Committee and direct the Associate Director in preparation of materials and site surveys.

Direct all personnel within Student Health Services—write and revise position descriptions, complete performance evaluations, provide feedback, and initiate disciplinary procedures in collaboration with the Associate Director. Oversee the Quality Improvement Program, including direction to the Quality Improvement Coordinator and committee, peer review processes, and assessment mechanisms.

Oversee the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) program, IPC Committee, safety plan, staff training, and clinical privileges application and approval process.

Serve as Laboratory Director and oversee Pharmacy‑in‑Charge and X‑ray department; formulate policies and procedures for laboratory, pharmacy, and X‑ray operations in compliance with state, federal, CSU, and accreditation requirements.

Collaborate with Associate Director on budget management, recruitment, and onboarding of clinical personnel.

Investigate and resolve customer complaints; partner with Counseling and Psychological Services and Care Services to improve mental health services and develop a collaborative care model.

Provide direct patient care as appropriate within scope of practice, including interviews, diagnosis, treatment, counseling, physical exams, minor surgery, referrals, ordering and interpreting X‑ray and lab tests, and documentation.

Consult with private physicians and public agencies to secure additional services for students and educate patients on health matters, including medication abortion.

Serve as physician consultant to staff and coordinate follow‑up care for after‑hours nurse advice line.

Provide sexual health education, counseling, and care, including medication abortion services.

Engage in professional development to maintain licensure and certification.

High‑Level Medical Leadership & Governance

Provide strategic medical leadership and executive oversight of organizational health governance; chair the Health Advisory Team, guide evidence‑based decision‑making, and align with objectives and regulatory requirements.

Act as senior medical authority and primary contact for illness, infection prevention, and emerging health risks; serve as designated medical spokesperson.

Advise student affairs executive leadership, campus emergency operations center, and President’s cabinet during health incidents; represent organization in advisory forums and ensure coordinated medical input.

Campus Collaboration and Public Health

Collaborate and strategize with key campus stakeholders to assess student healthcare needs; serve as campus subject‑matter expert on college student health and provide consultation on services, policies, and best practices.

Serve as liaison with federal, state, and county public health agencies; provide input and direction on campus responses to infectious disease and emergency response.

Serve on campus committees (e.g., IRB/Human Subjects Committee, Emergency Operations Committee) and participate in Student Affairs initiatives and campus‑wide events.

Other Duties as Assigned To be determined by the Associate Vice President for Student Experience and campus needs.

Qualifications

Medical degree (MD or DO) and residency in a primary care field accredited by the ACGME (or equivalent).

5–7 years of progressive leadership experience in health, medical practice, or public health administration; college health experience preferred.

Direct clinical care experience, preferably in an ambulatory or college health setting.

Experience managing clinical teams and operations in complex settings; budget management experience.

Current and unrestricted California physician’s and surgeon’s license (or license in another state with application in process for California).

Certification in a medical primary care specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Preferred Experience

Previous experience with AAAHC accreditation standards and survey.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of planning, development, and design of organizational structures for student services; leadership, management, and supervision of multidisciplinary teams.

Strategic planning skills to ensure effective delivery of programs and services; budget planning and resource allocation.

Understanding of Clery Act, FERPA, Title VI, Title IX, VAWA, ADA, Section 504, and other relevant regulations and policies.

Ability to work with diverse faculty, staff, and students and promote partnership and transparency.

Effective communication skills and ability to foster positive relationships with students, staff, faculty, and others.

Problem‑solving and conflict‑resolution skills; ability to generate options and identify solutions.

Strong analytical and technical skills for managing complex programs and budgets.

Compensation

Anticipated salary range: $245,000–$265,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30–35 % of base salary.

Out of State Work The CSU system is a network of twenty‑three public universities providing access to a quality education through the support of California taxpayers. The CSU Out‑of‑State Employment Policy prohibits hiring employees to perform CSU‑related work outside California.

Background Check Conditional offer pending satisfactory completion of a background check, including criminal records check.

CSU Classification Salary Range Position classified as Administrator III. Minimum $6,891, maximum $22,119 per month.
