Scholarship Position Description
This position is awarded a scholarship for 2026-2027. All scholarships are determined by position, time commitment, responsibility, and financial budget determined in April. The Editor-in-Chief selects a student to be awarded a scholarship to serve as the Managing Editor of The Daily Utah Chronicle.
Expectations
ATTENTION: This position requires a significant time commitment. If you are chosen and accept this position, it will be expected that you can satisfactorily meet the time commitment necessary. This means that you agree to not accept other positions outside of student media or otherwise make commitments that will impact your ability to meet this expectations.
Editorial Leadership
Brainstorm stories and actively seek out arts and entertainment content that reflects the campus community, assigning stories and beats to writers including recaps, previews, features, and other arts-specific series.
Maintain and seek out relationships with arts entities on and around campus.
Fill out print and online budgets and coordinate with production through the layout process.
Work with photographers on assignments and visual content for the section.
Attend all Editorial Board meetings and participate actively in group discussions.
Review The Daily Utah Chronicle’s print and online editions daily and bring any problems to the attention of the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor.
Writing and Editing
Read and correct all copy edits in the arts section for grammar, style, spelling, clarity, accuracy, and length, ensuring submission in time to meet both print and online deadlines.
Write content for the section as needed.
Respond to problems or grievances with arts content or writers in a timely, responsible, and mature manner.
Team Management
Ensure all arts writers receive proper onboarding training prior to writing, including AP style, interviewing techniques, journalistic practices, and Chronicle technologies such as WordPress and Slack.
Manage contributors on the desk to ensure they are fulfilling their duties, and work with them constructively to find solutions when they are not.
Hold weekly desk meetings for planning and training, and conduct regular one-on-one training sessions with writers.
Coordinate regularly with the assistant editor to divide responsibilities and determine how to most effectively maintain the content flow of the team.
Regularly respond to messages via Slack and Gmail and attend all mandatory meetings.
Evaluation
Meet with the Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief regularly to evaluate the desk’s progress and address any ongoing challenges.
Qualifications:
Prior leadership and/or management experience preferred.
Preference given to applicants with prior experience at The Chronicle or in Student Media.
Must be able to commit to the demanding schedule and maintain high levels of activity and quality of work.
Previous work and/or education and training in journalism required; experience writing about arts and entertainment preferred.
Understanding and working knowledge of necessary software and tools used in digital and print publishing preferred.
Content management, audience engagement, editing, or similar experience preferred.
Experience or knowledge of media marketing and content distribution, particularly in social media and community outreach, preferred.
Must be enrolled student progressing satisfactorily toward a degree.
Major or minor in mass communication, journalism, strategic communication, or a similar field preferred.

The experiential learning term is May 2026 through April 2027.
