About the Role
The Wall Street Journal Opinion section is looking for a New York-based Social Media Editor to join our growing team. This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate closely with some of the best Opinion writers and editors in the industry to ensure that the section's social and off-platform content is giving our audience the best possible experience.

This role will focus on executing daily social promotion, optimizing performance using data insights, and contributing to audience growth efforts across platforms. The social media editor will work closely with the Managing Editor, Opinion writers and editors, and the audience team to support broader distribution strategies. This role focuses on maximizing the reach and impact of Opinion journalism across social media, email and emerging platforms. The social media editor will execute daily promotion and manage newsletters, as well as analyze performance in order to assist the Managing Editor with translating audience insights into actionable guidance for the Opinion newsroom. You will be based in our New York office reporting to the Managing Editor, Opinion.

You Will

Execute daily social media promotion based on audience insights and editorial priorities.

Support the expansion of the Opinion brand's social media presence by introducing our content offerings over new social media platforms to attract a broader audience.

Optimize WSJ Opinion story packages for highest off-platform impact, including adjusting headline style and length, graphic sizing and legibility, photo crops, hyperlinks, etc., based on the information and suggestions provided by editors and industry best practices.

Assist with paid promotion tactics and help monitor performance metrics. Track and report on WSJ Opinion's social-media performance, identifying opportunities to improve engagement and traffic.

Compile regular performance summaries and share insights with editors and production teams.

Collaborate with the Managing Editor to identify trends and opportunities for off-platform expansion or growth.

Fact-check, edit and tag daily editorials. Compile associated research for Editorial Page Editor, as needed.

Assist editorial page stakeholders with implementing the digital strategy for the new Opinion Free Expression newsletter using audience insights and data.

Manage social media and distribution channels for the Free Expression newsletter, including Substack, to grow and engage readership.

Assist with the production of Opinion newsletters, including the weekly Sunday Morning Editorial Report, the six days-a-week Opinion Spotlight and the weekly All Things With Kim Strassel newsletters.

Coordinate with senior editors to draft the Sunday Morning Editorial Report and Opinion Spotlight newsletters. Compile, draft and assemble the newsletters based on established templates and editorial guidance.

Coordinate with Kim Strassel to adapt her All Things newsletter for both email and article formats, ensuring high production standards.

Support the implementation of digital content packages, including "digital wraps," symposiums, videos and other supplemental content.

Occasionally pitch and contribute bylined feature articles based on original research and reporting.

You Have

2-4 years of experience on a social media team at a news organization, or a successful online retailer or e-commerce company. Comfortable working with performance data and translating insights into actionable improvements.

Strong analytical mindset with attention to detail in data validation, reporting, and stakeholder communication.

Excellent writing and editing skills with sound editorial judgment.

Strong understanding of social platforms and referral traffic drivers.

Familiarity with analytics and reporting tools.

It is essential that candidates be familiar with the ideas, philosophy and principles for which the Wall Street Journal editorial page stands.

Additional Preferred Skills

Experience with SEO and audience analytical tools such as Adobe Analytics, Parse.ly, Google Analytics, or similar platforms.

Familiarity with social media management tools such as Social Flow, Later, Sprout, etc.

Interest in audience engagement and community building online.

Basic video, design, or multimedia production experience is a plus.
