Overview

Position Overview: As a catalyst for institutional change, the Director of the FDC will foster cross-unit collaborations and partner with departments and units to design, implement, and evaluate high-impact initiatives that enhance student learning across all modalities. The Director will serve as a prominent voice in campus-wide pedagogical conversations - ranging from the advancement of inclusive excellence to addressing the role of AI in pedagogy. The successful candidate will be a visionary leader committed to strengthening the FDC capacity to serve a diverse faculty community and elevating the culture of teaching and learning at UMBC. A hybrid telework schedule may be available. Responsibilities

Lead the organizational redesign and implement the 2025 self-study recommendations; redefine the mission, goals, and service tiers; report to and advise the Vice Provost on pedagogical strategy. Partner with departments, Deans, and other campus units (e.g., DOIT) and lead university-wide pedagogical conversations to enhance student learning across UMBC and seek and support the SoTL component of external grants (NSF, NEH, etc.) Spearhead initiatives for inclusive excellence, including but not limited to developing frameworks for the ethical/generative use of AI; use learning analytics to identify and close equity gaps. Lead, support and enhance the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) for faculty at all career stages; lead Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) Required Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D., Ed.D. degree or terminal degree in a discipline represented at the University A minimum of five years of teaching experience in higher education. Demonstrate proven leadership ability in a faculty setting and a deep understanding of educational development scholarship. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. A documented ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty and administrators with different disciplinary backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications

R1 institution experience preferred. A documented record of publications or presentations in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Proven ability to lead institutional change, organizational redesign, or culture shift initiatives within a complex university environment. Experience in securing and managing internal and external grants (e.g., NSF, NEH, or private foundations) related to educational improvement. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing program-level assessment to measure the impact of faculty development on student learning outcomes. Ability to use institutional data and learning analytics to identify equity gaps and inform inclusive programming. Background Screening Statement

Salary: $134,000 - $151,000 depending on qualifications and experience. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Hours
