The mission of Bethany House is to empower survivors of domestic violence and their children by providing long-term transitional shelter and advocacy to maximize safety, ensure access to resources, and restore hope with dignity and respect.

JOB TITLE: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR (ED)

REPORTS TO: Bethany House Board of Trustees and Sylvania Franciscan Ministries (SFM)

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt, Full-time

NORMAL WORKING HOURS: 40 hours per week – The ED is required to be available to support and supervise staff, attend community events and collaborative meetings, respond to community requests for information and presentations, oversee the facility, grant research and facilitation, complete administrative duties, and to provide on-call crisis intervention. These hours may include holiday, evening, and weekend hours.

The Executive Director is a committed leader with integrity who guides the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission through effective trauma-informed programming and supervision, strategic community engagement, ethical fiscal responsibility, and operational excellence in collaboration with the Board of Trustees and SFM.

KEY RESPONSIBIILITIES

Leadership

  • Provide leadership and direction in the development, management, implementation, and evaluation of all aspects of the organization in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, best practices, and legal standards.
  • Represent, implement, and support the mission of Bethany House and the values of the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania both internally and in the community.
  • Serve as the agency’s primary spokesperson taking a lead role in representing the best interests of the organization and its service participants.
  • In collaboration with the Board of Trustees, and staff input, develop mission driven and effective long-term strategic plans. Prepare and present a strategic plan and impact report annually.
  • Fiercely advocate for the rights of survivors of domestic violence, responding to legal actions, community policies and trends, challenging what would put survivors and their children at risk of harm.

Program Oversight

  • Ensure quality of services through mentoring and supervision of staff, accurate data collection, review of policy and protocol, and program assessments.
  • Compile annual quality assurance reports.
  • Ensure Bethany House utilizes evidence-based practices such as Trauma Informed Care and strength-based service approaches.
  • Ensure that all services provided by Bethany House are accessible to survivors of domestic violence, regardless of ability, age, national origin, race, color, ancestry, family/marital status, sex, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, military status, disability status, medication needs, guardianship status, need for auxiliary aids, use of a service animal, or any other protected status under applicable laws in any of its activities.
  • Ensure that services provided are coordinated through regular staff meetings, multi-disciplinary teams, cross trainings, and documentation review.
  • Ensure shelter participant program agreements and StepUP onsite tenant leases are upheld per applicable best practices and laws.
  • Provide crisis intervention services (on-call required) to Bethany House participants and staff which focus on enhancing each program participant’s safety, ability to problem solve, utilize effective coping skills, and improve their overall well-being.

Community Engagement

  • Actively seek strategic networking to build a thriving and well-resourced organization.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with community groups, funders, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization.
  • Provide information, presentations, and trainings to civic and social groups as requested.
  • Ensure outreach materials reflect the mission and values of the organization, are accessible, truthful, and conform to best practices.
  • Provide leadership in fundraising efforts and events, assessing costs and benefits to fundraising activities and ensuring efforts are aligned with the mission of Bethany House.

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Fiscally responsible for the day-to-day, monthly, and annual management of revenue and expenses for Bethany House.
  • Secure funding for the operation of the organization through ethical fundraising.
  • Oversee and complete grant procurement, grant management, statistical reporting, financial reporting, and ensure grant activities are implemented with excellence, ethically, and in a timely manner.
  • Complete annual agency budget proposal and ensure the accuracy of monthly financial statements.
  • Assist in the completion of annual audit and 990 preparations.
  • Process donations, authorize bill payment and contracted services according to financial policy and procedures.
  • Ensure donor rights are upheld and donation acknowledgements conform to IRS standards.

Operations: Board, Human Resources, Facility

  • Function as a professional advisor to the Board of Trustees on all aspects of the organization's activities. Serve as an ex-officio member of the Board and as a member of all committees.
  • Seeks Board approval for contracts and purchases according to policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate monthly Board meetings via timely notices, agenda development, review, and dissemination of minutes.
  • Plan and coordinate an annual Board Meeting.
  • Hire, orient, train, evaluate, provide strengths-based trauma-informed supervision, and terminate staff guided by applicable personnel laws and best practices.
  • Ensure that job descriptions are developed, regular performance evaluations completed, and comprehensive human resource practices are in place.
  • Serves as HR benefits administrator; educating and facilitating enrollment of qualified employees on the variety of benefits available.
  • Approves staff timekeeping, use of personal time, and facilitates payroll.
  • Maintain a positive, accessible, inclusive, supportive, and safe work climate that attracts, maintains, and motivates a diverse staff of top-quality people.
  • Manage the facility in collaboration with the House Manager: create long term maintenance plans, comply with safety and accessibility regulations, approve staff purchases and contracted services.
  • Ensure safety procedures for staff and program participants are consistently followed, reviewed, and updated as needed.
  • Clerical and administrative duties may include answering calls, monitoring security, knowledge of office equipment (copier, fax, computer, printer, etc.), assisting with facilities (upkeep, cleanliness, and maintenance) as needed.

The work is performed primarily in an indoor setting. Driving is required. There is possible exposure to communicable diseases, violent people and/or acts. The noise level is usually moderate.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in social services or related field is required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in advocacy and demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of domestic violence survivors and their children.
  • Previous shelter or residential services experience preferred, and an understanding of domestic violence shelter best practice standards.
  • Previous management and supervisory experience from a Trauma Informed Framework preferred.
  • Ability to work from an empowerment and survivor driven service model.
  • Strong computer skills including spread sheets and databases; comfortable in Microsoft Office; WORD, EXCEL, POWER POINT.
  • Proficiency in grant writing, grant budgets, and strategic planning implementation.
  • Demonstrated fiscal management skills including working with budgets and financial statements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part the team with demonstrated maturity and professional judgment.
  • A highly motivated initiative-taker and ability to coordinate multiple projects/tasks at once.
  • Knowledge of maintaining and executing confidential information and record keeping.
  • Flexible, adaptable and have the capability to work in a facility-based shelter environment.

Requirements

  • Be able to lift 40 pounds and ability to climb stairs required.
  • Must have and maintain a vehicle, a valid driver’s license, and proof of auto insurance.
  • Successful completion of background screening, including a credit review.
  • Must have and maintain a working cell phone (will receive a monthly reimbursement stipend at a rate to be determined annually by the Bethany House Board of Trustees).
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with sensitivity and tact, with all people regardless of race, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, other types of cultural differences, including individuals with a variety of coping strategies and histories of trauma.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
  • Self-awareness and confidence to work in an energetic and dynamic environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of domestic violence and the impact of trauma on staff working in this field.
  • Well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Creative and visionary ability to develop ways to improve operations of the organization and to create new opportunities.
  • Strength in assessing complex situations to identify root causes, process information to generate viable solutions.
  • The ability to manage time effectively, remain calm, and work effectively under and manage stress.
