Disaster Preparednes Outreach Specialist
AmeriCorps, Houston, TX, United States
Program Overview
Sewa's AmeriCorps' Disaster Services Program—takes Disaster Preparedness training directly to under‑served recent immigrant and refugee communities which often lack access to ready information and are generally the most impacted by emergencies. Our goal is to make individuals reasonably self‑sufficient, while teaching them to build community networks to enhance resilience in the face of a disaster.
With their service, Members will help mitigate the effect of the disaster for the community to recover in a shorter time and at a reduced cost by establishing preventative measures and protocols, and by developing plans for effective use of community resources. With workshops for adults and children in community centres, schools, workplaces, churches and temples and in partnership with the City of Houston, Harris County Office of Emergency Management and other service organisations, our greater goal is to cultivate a culture of preparedness across the city, the state and eventually the country through useful knowledge, access to resources and the development of community networks.
