Hilo Benioff Medical Center is seeking an experienced Assistant Director of Human Resources – Employee & Labor Relations to support workforce relations across the East Hawaii Region. This role provides strategic and operational leadership for labor relations, employee relations, workplace investigations, and HR compliance while partnering closely with executive leadership. The position plays a key role in fostering a collaborative, respectful, and high-performing workplace culture that supports quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the region’s primary labor relations advisor and liaison with multiple labor unions, providing interpretation of collective bargaining agreements and facilitating labor-management collaboration.
Lead and oversee workplace investigations involving misconduct, discrimination, harassment, policy violations, and workplace violence concerns.
Manage grievance processes through arbitration and advise leadership on disciplinary actions, conflict resolution, and performance management.
Coordinate and oversee responses to employment-related legal and regulatory matters, including cases involving the EEOC, Hawaii Civil Rights Commission, Department of Labor, and other agencies.
Oversee HR compliance programs including ADA accommodations, Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and Hawaii Family Leave Law administration.
Partner with leadership to analyze workforce trends, develop HR policies and metrics, and implement initiatives that improve employee engagement, retention, and organizational effectiveness.
Minimum Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Five (5) years of progressive experience in human resources functions such as employee relations, labor relations, personnel program development, or HR administration.
Two (2) years of supervisory or leadership experience.
Demonstrated experience advising management on complex employee and labor relations matters and conducting workplace investigations.
SPHR certification required within 12 months of appointment.
Valid Hawaii State driver’s license (Standard, Type 3).
